Default Short to ground

Just bought 2007 H3 was randomly popping fuse #33 ign 1. I would replace with key off and it would work for a few days then pop again. We removed the rear bumper to paint and I noticed trailer wires between bumper and body were worn through. I cut and replaced wires and it ran fine for a few days. Now I replace fuse with key off and as soon as I turn key to ACC #33 pops.

I took my test light and connected clamp to positive lead on battery and checked both sides of the connections of #33 with the fuse out and the test light came on. I decided to check all other fuses and this is what I got….

48-a/c clutch
42-trlr bck up
36-horn
30-rear defrost
24-fog lamp
3-fuel pump
37-lr prk
43-frt prk
49-rr prk
55-trlr

all of which had ground connection while test light hooked to positive lead on battery. Hoping someone has had this same issue and can help me trace down the wire based on wiring diagram.

LOOK at and review you wire replacement job. The issue you had is not uncommon, and did not require re-wiring. Simple re-rout harness wires and insulate worn wires may have been the way to go. Been there, done that.

they might all get fed internally in the fuse box from the same power feed. pull those fuses one at a time to maybe narrow down your grounding issue to one circuit that can be back feeding.

great idea! Exactly why I’m here asking questions. I’ll try that tonight and try to narrow it down. Thanks again.

All of the fuses removed are showing short to ground on one side of the fuse terminal. The ignition fuse shows short to ground on both terminals. Once I disconnect the battery for a few days I can replace the ignition fuse without it popping and it will idle for hours. Once I put it in gear and drive it will move about 30-40 yards and pop the fuse and die. Even with the harness disconnected from the trans it still shows short to ground based on continuity on multimeter. I’m lost…..

maybe the short is in the fuse box? maybe corrosion inside of it?

No mention of a review of your "re-wire" which has a ground, that is the end ground for a bunch/most of the items on your list stated in the beginning.

i pulled the fuse box apart and inspected the entire thing. No burn marks or corrosion.

I checked those wires and some of them have short to ground. So, I’m worried it may be further up the harness from the rear of the truck and won’t really know unless I pull the whole harness out. FML
