actually i should do it too. like 4-5 times per year i have same problem- the engine cranking but not starting. so normally i lit the cigarette and think about meaning of the life, after that my H3 is good to go... i been thinking to buy this ignition switch, but if i can just clean the contacts....
btw, when i did all that work last summer-fall, i noticed how deep the starter its hidden... i hope i never have to change it, just cant imagine how to get to remove it..

It looks like you got some great advice already on here, I just thought I would share my experience with you as well. I have a 2009 H3 as well, this just started happening to me within the last year or so, and I have had this vehicle for 6 years. The lights work and radio works. It starts after about 15-20 minutes of just waiting. I noticed the “engine lock” light on when this happens, it’s a light of the engine with a big lock through it, so for me, it’s got something with the security system or theft prevention. I talked to a mechanic who didn’t know what it was but he contacted someone that works on Hummers and that person said that it’s a security pass issue that is easily fixed. I have not brought it in to have it fixed yet but am going to soon. But in my personal observation, it only happens when I lock and unlock my doors using the key fob. It has even happened when my doors weren’t locked but I pressed the “unlock “ on the key fob. I tried the extra key and the extra key fob and that didn’t make any difference, it still would not start randomly. So now I just don’t lock my vehicle and I don’t press the key fob lock or unlock at all and everything has been fine ( I know, it’s not safe) but this has been working for me. It starts every time now. I was also told to try replacing the battery in the key fobs as they are quite old and was also told that when your battery is replaced, they are supposed press some kind of a reset button after that too. I don’t know if any of these work but I will let you know after I bring it in to the mechanic that has fixed this issue before on other Hummers. And thank you to everyone for some great advice! I appreciate it!

Without the RKE prevents activating the Theft Deterrent System.

My 2009 did the same thing. I used the contact cleaner at the switch and it "fixed" it for a few months. Came back though. Tried the contact cleaner again, no joy, kept recurring. Tried replacing the actual switch on the key cylinder with a brand new switch, but no joy - car wouldn't recognize the new one. So, I put the old switch back in and voila, worked again for a few months, but eventually came back. Then I cleaned the contacts at the switch, BCM, ECU, all the grounds, new battery terminals etc, all with no real improvement.

The actual encoding of the passlock signal comes from hall effect sensors (magnets), and then travels through multiple stages to the ECU to "unlock" the starter. The implementation is fragile - any of a thousand electrical interference or noise issues anywhere in the car's electronics could clobber that signal. My final fix was a PCM tune with a passlock delete right at the ECU. This was seriously the best money I have spent on my H3! Now, on those random days when the passlock gets tripped I can still see the flashing icon in the cluster, but my car starts and runs just fine.

Dude get a new Ignition Lock Housing, Rock auto has them and Amazon, you only need that black part but you have to buy the whole housing, just take the black part off and put it on your housing, it might need program, but that's easy. but yea that was my problem.

Smile Thank you Hummerz

Hi again hummerz and others. As stated, I did what hummerz said last February. It did fix the problem and it has not reoccured! Even though he is a little straight forward, I appreciate hummerz and his recommendation! I just hope after writing this, the issue doesn't come back.
I will say this though, after I did the fix, I get a little ticking sometimes right after starting. Lasts 1-3 seconds. Sounds like it comes from same area as ignition switch, but no other problems present. I can live with that...

I only needed to clean the switch twice on mine, 6-7yrs apart, driven 2-3 times per week now. If it happens again, you know what to do!
