Don’t take a Defender on a test drive unless you have impulse control. They’re fun and your learned driving from an H3 will fit in seamlessly. Quick, fun, easy to menuver comming fresh out of an H3 and the interior is reminiscent of past times, just decent quality no nonesense. Tows big #s for its size 8k lbs. Downsides are if you get the air suspension, you’re potentially looking at $3-5000 per corner in 7-10 years from new. Low articulation when in the offroad max height. Can probably get a coil spring version cheaper, put a mild lift on and have a more durable overlanding rig.other downside is if you go to a LR dealer they’re going to annoy you talking about all these dumb features for soccer moms and city folk and look at you crazy if you start talking about legit going offroad. Don’t even try. They’ll just bs with scripts landrover gave them to say to soccer moms. It seems like a quality 4x4 though and reports are saying they aren’t as unreliable as the range rovers.

The GX550 isnt as fun to drive as the defender. It is more practical and possibly more durable and long lasting, at least the suspension and body on frame construction. 3rd row seat for kids and still ok angles. It’s not as fun as the defender though. Feels a bit sluggish on the gas and steering. Possibly because it’s just a turbo instead of a twin charger like the defenders super and turbo charger. Sluggish steering, more body roll. Stealing wheel just feels small and odd. Not like a truck stealing wheel. Feels like it’s taken off a passenger car. The drivers area just looks a bit odd/foreign. Not truck like. -tows big for size like the defender. Has the most comfy seats out of everything in this post, can hold a bunch of kids and dogs and gear.

Option I was looking at, keep the H3(Im doing that now) and a Jeep Wagoneer. Theyr’e super comfy on the road, drive well, can be had cheap(they’ve sold poorly, most of their sales went to fleet and rental companies, dont pay KBB or retail, your underwater before signing the contract). Really good car to drive if it doesnt blow up. There was an issue with stalantis cheaping out on the thermostats and all the soccer moms were overheating the Hurricane engines and just kept driving warping the heads/blocks requiring replacement. Theyre nice though, just dont think it’s an actual off-roader. The 4x4 is for snow trips.

GMC At4/Chevy Tahoe z71 are pretty cool, not as nice as the Wagoneer. They are the dependable family choice. The brakes are seriously horrible. They feel like they put on undersized brakes. Literally couldn’t shake it out of my head. Pretty long lived trucks. Pretty over priced but Hold value well because people know they’ll do the job for a long time with not much fuss(5.3lengine). They finally fixed things so the 3. Diesel will fit in the new ones. Not sure if it makes sense. Added cost negates any savings at the pump here. I think gm built that engine to scam the former federal brand wide mpg requirements. . Good people mover/vacation mobile. Not a real off-roader, just like the wagoneer.

Near miss-New Gen Toyota Landcruiser-have to carry a bunch of batteries around with you. Toyota is ruining their SUV’s with their stupid battery packs in rear cargo area/under the 3rd row seat. Destroys cargo area(completely in the Sequia). The payload capacity of the Landcruiser is laughable if you look into it. If you filled the car with people, theres literally no payload left even for a full tank of gas. No luggage, no trailer, nothing.

toyota sequia - nice driving rig. Looks super cheap inside and their 80k. Battery destroys the rear cargo area. 3rd row seats don’t even fold flat. More usable cargo area in an H3 despite the seqioua being much larger. Good power, good driving good mpg(part time 4wd) good towing.

I’m leaning to the gx 550 but the dealers are still playing games out here, selling them to each other, then listing them used for $10,000 over msrp and telling people who want a new one theres none available. Might end up with a defender if i decide im done having kids and dont pick up a woman with kids of hr own.
