Default H3 Alpha shopping advice / towing advice

Hi

Looking hard at buying an 2008 Alpha very soon. The kids & wife are absolutely stoked over one of these - just need some advice/thoughts/opinions before I take the plunge.

1. How do boats trailer behind the Alpha's?
2. How many different configurations did the 2008 Alphas come in? any links for specifics or particaulr a better transmission
3.'Typical' gas mileage?
4. How do they handle in snow? We're from Wisconsin.

I'm sure I'll more questions, but lets start here.

Default 08 alpha

I got my 08 alpha with the x package, im from the nwt canada its great for winter (about 8 months a year here ) gas mileage is pretty decent on highway not so great in town but I think its worth the extra gas for what you get.

I have owned 3 08 Alphas (still have 1).

#1. Towing depends on the weight, number of axles and length of the trailer behind it. I have towed a 18' car hauler (double axle) with a jeep on it, about 5200lbs total and it was decent but not a piece of cake. I have trailerd a 16' enclosed trailer (about 3500lbs) up an back to Drummond Island from the Detroit area 4 times(double axle) and didn't even realize there was a trailer sometimes until it got windy over the bridge.

#2. 08 Alphas have the 4spd auto, no other option. You can get the OffRoad package which will include 4:1 transfercase and rear locker. Great for wheeling! All 08 Alphas came with the Lux package standard and there are very few options that they didn't come with stock (trailering, backup camera, Nav, Etc.)

#3. All depends on who is driving! Ours have 35s, winch bumpers, roof Racks and Rock rails (Lots-O-Weight). I get 12-14mpg with a good mix of city/highway. When my wife drives she gets 14-16 mpg! I been told I have a heavy foot.

#4. Snow? Mine have been outstanding, very stable and the traction control (electronic nannys) are helpful until it's really deep. Then I trun off the nannys and go. We travel "up-north" a lot in the winter and have only great things to say about our HUMMERS in the snow!

May I suggest you drive more than 1 08 H3 before making your decision. Drive an 08 H3 with the 3.7l I5 and an 08 H3 5.3l Alpha. That should help you make up your mind. We also have an 09 H3T with the 3.7l I5 and love it (it's a 5 speed).

Tainter,

Thank you for the response. We've been using a 07 H3 I5 for a couple weeks. Amazing vehicle that has us sold. We just need a little added beef to pull boats, waverunners and loaded up 4 wheeler trailers.

My wife and I are very excited and now just need to find a white 08 Alpha with low miles. We have no problem flying around the country either. Just another adventure to get it.

LOL...My wife is sold on white. Miles, condition, options is more important to me in some ways.

I just don't get why some of these have the side steps, brush guards and some don't. I thought the Alpha pkg was just that.. 'Alpha' option.

Basically, ALPHA = V8 engine

A lot of the options like brush guards, nerfs etc. were dealer installed options.

Brush Guards, Roof Rails, Cab Lights, Nurf Bars, Etc. are all dealer installed options. The dealer or purchasing customer decided on what "dealer installed options" got put on what HUMMER.

I wouldn't let a brush guard, nurf bars or roof rails deter you from selecting a certian HUMMER. All of those items can be bought used/take offs (I have 3 sets of nurf bars and a brush guard that have never been used).
