Default Engine troubles..maybe fuel related

2005 H3 with 125k miles on it. Has been running fine then just quit in traffic. It started up and was able to get it to a parking lot. It was showing 1/4 tank so we dumped 5 gal of gas into it that brought it to 1/2. Starts right up but has surging and will just quit. Starts right up again so we loaded it onto a trailer and brought it home. It started right up and drove down to the garage.

It sounded like it was running out of gas but that is just a guess. We had an Escalade that behaved the same way and a new fuel pump fixed it.

How do I check the fuel pressure? It appears that it does not have an external fuel filter.

No check engine lights.

There are no 2005 H3s, there were 2006s sold in mid 2005. Most US made vehicles have not had serviceable fuel filters for many years....like 15+.

Scan it for codes, some do not cause CELs including yours. You might want to hook it to a scanner and view what is going on live time when it is running later if still stumped.

Does it have an aftermarket alarm? Sunroof? Floors ever been wet?

Search here, there are threads on fuel problems, testing, etc.... but not truly a how to. You check it with a pressure test kit (you can rent/borrow one from an auto parts chain) off the fuel rail. There are also basic fuel pressure testing vids out there for other vehicles.

Oops it is a 2006.

Our 6.0 Escalade had a filter. My 2005 F1150 had one and it caught some nasty funk after 200k miles. It was partially clogged.

Getting a pressure gauge now and will have those results in an hour or 2.

It has a sunroof and the floors were drenched a year ago when we bought it. It is a daily driver and the problem started unexpectedly yesterday.. We cleaned the sunroof drains months ago and it has not rained in days.

Well the gauge is sitting straight on 58 psi with no wavering during revving. I don't think that is our trouble.

The MAF is responsible for calculating the total amount of air entering the engine. A contaminated or failed mass air flow sensor cannot measure the amount of air flow correctly. This causes the engine computer to miscalculate the amount of injected fuel, There are 3 key signs that may indicate it’s time to examine your MAF sensor:

Stalling, jerking, or hesitation during acceleration

Check the wiring harness and connector to the MAF for corrosion, cracks, worn insulation, burns/melting etc...
