Default Dingy tow 2008 H3 procedure help

I have dingy towed my 2008 H3 many times in the past. But, it’s been about 5 years. I know how to shift transfer case to neutral by putting the tranny in neutral and pressing the 4Hi and 4Lo until the transfer case neutral light comes on. What I can’t remember, do I then move the shifter to park or do I leave in neutral. Also, I can’t remember if I need to leave the key in on position or turn completely off when towing. My Hummer is a 2008 H3. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

Per the manual: Transfer case in Neutral, Transmission in Park, Ignition Off.

Default Transfer case will not move to neutral

Okay, I followed procedure. Started H3, set brake, shifted to neutral. Held 4H lock & 4L lock buttons simultaneously for at minimum 10 seconds and no move of the transfer case to neutral. The neutral light does work it comes on at ignition on. I was able to shift transfer case from 4H to 4H lock and also to 4L lock with no issue and back to 4H. Just not neutral. Any ideas?

READ and follow the procedure exactly..

Shifting Into NEUTRAL
To shift the transfer case to NEUTRAL, do the following:
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Start the vehicle by turning the ignition to START.
3. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N). If your vehicle has a manual transmission, press and hold the clutch pedal down while you perform Steps 5 through 9.
4. Shift the transfer case to Four-Wheel High.
5. Simultaneously press and hold the Four-Wheel High and Four-Wheel-Low Lock buttons for 10 seconds. The NEUTRAL light will come on when the transfer case shift to NEUTRAL is complete.
6. Press and hold the regular brake pedal and Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one second, then shift the transmission for one second to DRIVE (D) for an automatic transmission, or FIRST (1) for vehicles have a manual transmission and then let out the clutch. This is to ensure the transfer case is in NEUTRAL. If not, repeat this procedure starting at Step 3.
7. Turn the engine off, by turning the key to ACC. 8. Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P) for an automatic transmission, or FIRST (1) for vehicles that have a manual transmission. 9. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.

Default Doc Olds question

In your reply you had “shift transfer case to high” in bold. We are talking 4 high not 4 high lock right? Also my hummer stays in regular 4 high all the time, so so I need to go to lock and then back to standard 4 high? If it’s already in 4 high then do I so nothing?

It is the order that you push buttons that tells the TCCM and in turn the T Case that you want to shift to neutral. You cannot just assume since I am in 4 high (not hi or lo lock) already I can just skip that step. Push the 4 hi button at step 4.

Real easy, stop reading into it and follow the procedure.

Kinda like asking why is Pi 3.14159265359? if what you want is to determine the circumference of a circle from its diameter it don't matter, just do it.

Default Thanks Doc!

You are right, I was reading the same instructions in my manual that you sent. I was getting hung up where it said press 4H & 4L lock at the same time. I was misinterpreting that to me press the 4H (lock) and 4L lock. When I wend back and did the procedure of pressing 4H (not lock) and 4L lock it switched the transfer case to neutral as needed. This was all on me trying to read too much into the instructions in the manual. Thank you very much for your help!

the black line above the buttons are a visual representation of the instructions. left end of line plus right end of line enables the neutral light middle line.
