Default Benefits-solar panels on roof racks?

I seen an H1 all decked out fuel cells awning and solar panels. Was trying to figure out what the benefits were and how it could help my H3 or in a camping situation? Thanks!

He may be using it as a long term camping or overlanding rig. I bet he has a small fridge, an inverter for electrical outlets and what not. Maybe a diesel heater that requires electricity for the fan. Im sure he has a couple of deep cycle batteries hooked up.
Maybe he lives out of it. There really isn't a use for solar panels if you aren't spending multiple days without driving. Honestly it does have kind of a cool factor, but other than those few things, its not worth the money or the hassle.

Main reason I'm getting one is because my fake plastic championship edition louver blew off (previous owner had the recall completed and Hummer won't do anything now) and it's cheaper to go the solar route then get another louver replacement, only for it to inevitably break again. I also don't drive it except for camping excursions so it makes sense for me. Plus one day I'll probably get an electric cooler.

You are kidding yourself. Check ebay for the H3 Hood Louvers, you can buy a brand new knock off for $109 w/free shipping. What is a properly fitting solar panel with hardware, wiring, inverter and battery going to cost, not to mention the glare off of it in your face.

I have had at least one H3 continuously since 2007, never had any hood louver issues.

Welcome to HF.

Personally I'm not a fan of knock offs. I was referring to the admitted most expensive way...through the dealer and they were $450. The mostly plug and play from Lensun Solar Energy starts at $345. I also am not a fan of the fake louver to begin with, however now that you mention the potential glare I'm leaning towards functional metal. That doesn't help my other issue which is that I don't drive it much and plugged in battery maintainer is not feasible at my house.

Also thank you for not hitting me with the 'this thread is too old why did u respond' shame. I hesitated before hitting enter 😄

What would a "functional metal" H3 Louver be? Like to let hot air out? Like for cooking hot dogs at a trail stop.

Even if that is what you are referring to, you would have to cut openings in the hood under where your metal hot dog rack is to go and it would not change engine operating temp as that is controlled by the PCM and T Stat regardless of hood no hood opening.

I do not like knock offs either, buy a used one on ebay, set up solar on top of the cab.

Good luck.

What frickin' rip off of a dealership quoted you $450 for the OEM hood grille? Just called the local GMC dealership and they quoted me $327.50. Not that I would EVER take mine to a dealership.

Get your credit or debit card out of your purse/fanny pack/virtual wallet and buy online with your cellular device/lap top/library computer.
Have it shipped directly to your address (yes you have to type that in also). $36 shipping (to Denver, CO) + $179 = $215!

Some times you have to walk these "people" through every step.
Maybe he is trying to pull a fast one on his boyfriend, wife, girlfriend, baby momma, (insert an alphabet people letters here), etc. and wants solar panels???
