balance shaft timing chain
A knock does not come from a bearing, it is caused by improper fuel ignition timing.
So, yeah, if your mechanic is correct, your motor has out of whack timing, which is one potential cause for knocking. Can also be bad spark plug(s), low quality fuel, cylinder wall deposits, burnt piston, and on and on........
If the repair place ever worked on I5 powered Colorado or Canyon trucks, they share the same engine and trans.

That would make me more than a bit nervous. However, have they ever worked on a Chevy Colorado (same engine)? And the fact that "your mechanic" is asking you which bearing he should go after makes me even more nervous. I wouldn't let someone like that touch my H3; he's obviously clueless.
I just read the posts on this. Your mechanic sounds like he what he knows is just enough. Picked out the noise on the back of the motor. He thought it was the balance shafts chain causing the problem. Fortunately he found a problem before going in deep. Sounds like an honest person. Told you he has little experience with the in-line 5, yet the problem is fixed. Now the mechanic has a little more experience.
BS..if that timing chain broke it is in the back of the motor...it would entangle itself with the gear on the crank and your motor would lock up and not rotate. Period If your car is knocking you have lost oil supply to a bearing...Rod Bearing on 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5th cylinder. Does it knock when you start it and then quiet down after oil pressure is reached?
If your flex plate broke...that would not make a knocking noise...the flex plate is bolted to the rear (crank) of the engine and the starter turns it around to start the engine. The torque convertor is bolted to the flex plate and sometimes the 4 bolts holding it can vibrate loose but this will not produce a typical knocking noise. You more thatn likely have a rod knocking or 1 of the 5 cylinders connecting rod bearing is gone.
I'm just seeing that this thread was from 2015. Can we get a follow up? If it was truly a knock as you say...it was more than likely from the bottom end of the motor...cylinders 1-5...one of them has a rod knocking.
The guy hasn't been here in years and he said it was the flex plate before disappearing.
