2009 H3 ABS Brake Issue
Hi - hopefully someone can help or point me in the right direction. As you can probably guess, no brakes unless I really stand on them, and all the usual suspects of ABS, Stability System, and Traction Control lights are alarming on the dash..
I went to my local shop and they said ABS pump. They can't get one but can have mine sent out and rebuilt for about $ 3,000. Ouch. They banged on it with a hammer and it temporarily came back to life. I have done this a few times myself, and also banged on the accumulator to get it back to life during this investigation process. I visited GMC. They said it could be the pump/brake assembly (includes accumulator), which they can get new for $ 1,500. They thought it could be the accumulator possibly, but they can't get that part alone (but said if I could find it, they would install for me) So I started hunting. No H3 new accumulators anywhere, but I did find a new H2. The parts guy told me it should work. So I got it and spun it on. Same issue. So banging on the accumulator isn't really the issue - as the vibration must be traveling to the ABS pump and then it works for a short while. Do I have to bleed the brakes after spinning on the accumulator? YouTube seemed to say no, but I really don't know. Any other ideas or suggestions as to where to find parts? I see the pump/brake assembly used for $ 500 but that seems risky. I'm pretty handy, but I don't know if I can change a master cylinder assembly myself. Does it simply bolt onto the firewall and then you just connect a few brake lines? But then I'm sure I have to bleed them and my garage is not equipped for that. Thanks in advance for any guidance! |

You only need one thread for the same topic, stick to that.
My first suggestion is find another local repair shop that knows what they are doing. Scan and post any codes, I would expect an ABS code of some kind stored in there somewhere. Next, you may have to have to scrounge your parts used/pre-owned from ebay, car-part.com, local pick n pulls etc. Before you go looking for parts you have to know what is wrong to look for the replacement. |
Thanks Doc. I did try the single thread (and I knew someone was going to ding me on that) - but no one replied so I assumed it was lost too low in the queue. I have an appt for another diagnosis. I'm sure the first place pulled the codes. Basically, it would seem this is is a pricey process unless the consumer can fix it on their own, but I'll see what shop #3 says.

WTF?shop#3?In general, a diagnostic fee will cost around $100 x3?YOU CAN GET A SCANNER WITH ABS for less than $50. Post the code(s) & save$$$$ |
Lol! I'm completely lost. If I read you correctly:
Shop #1 will have it rebuilt Shop #2 Hay will F'n guess lol Shop #3 Says hey another cars chit will work....haha How about we start with the beginning of this story. Codes and some history! Because there is NO way in h@ll your gonna fix a car by just guessing. Well OK maybe if your really good or lucky ... |
OK - thanks. Clearly I've over-complicated. Let's start again.
History - all was fine until Stab System, Brakes, and ABS lights appeared. Hydraulic braking is gone. Sometimes I can bring it back temporarily using the hammer method. Shop 1 diagnosed. I assume scanned. Says ABS pump parts unavailable so remove/rebuild for $ 3000. (that's a third of the car's value) That sounded suspicious, so... I went to GMC dealer to talk and confirm parts are unavailable. They didn't do any work - just said that they CAN get a complete assembly new for $ 1,600. Then a corvette friend referred me to a shop that specializes in classics and hard to find parts - appt on Tuesday. So really just 1 shop looked and I assume pulled codes. I went to Advance Auto today to scan and they say there are no codes logged. (but they didn't seem on top of their game so I will find another store tomorrow or purchase a scanner). I hope this is something simple (like a vacuum issue), but I expect it won't be. If I have to cough up $$, I just want to be somewhat comfortable that it's legit - if I can't resolve it myself. Thanks again for any guidance. Hope this is clearer. |
