Default 2006 H3 timing chain replacement

The timing chain on my 06 H3 recently started making noise when idling. Stopped driving for now. Does anyone know an average replacement cost? Not throwing any codes yet. Service engine light has not come on yet and no misfiring or loss of power.

How many miles? Noise itself is not a reason to stop driving it.

Worn out chain tensioners lead to noise on start up and idling for sure. The chain itself can go a chit ton of miles before it wears out/over stretches.

It has 186,000 miles on it. But still runs and drives really good. Only making a noise when idling. Can't hear any noise when driving down the road. I wasn't sure if I should keep driving cause I was afraid it might get worse. Do you have any idea what replacing a timing chain might cost? It has the the I5 engine.

Google it for one of those repair cost estimators.

You have to pull the motor to get at both ends of engine and do both chains. If you were going to do that, might as well do a full rebuild. To do just the front, the motor can stay if you can finesse the chain off/on the oil pump by just loosening the oil pan bolts to gain enough room. Gonna cost you something like $1600 - $3500 just for the chain(s) depending upon where you go.

I know people with over 220K miles and they did nothing.......... yet.

Thanks for the info Doc. Mine just recently started making a little noise when idling. It's been making the noise at start up for several years but would go away in 30 to 40 seconds after start up. I really appreciate you taking the time to get this info for me.

Agreed! That would be the best route. Just replace the entire engine with a refreshed or brand new / remanufactured.
There is zero reason to keep a tired dog with 200k lol!

@Happy Hummer My 3.7 I5 needs neither a chain nor a replacement motor BUT always keen to know where I can order a replacement long block at a fair market price to arrive in my driveway on a pallet.

I have junk yards and rebuilders near me but would not know where to go for crate thanks.

there is a vendor offering remanufactured on ebay. But close to 5k. You have to finish off quite a bit. It's also for 07.
