Where does the H2 store it Mileage info?
I have a cousin looking at a used 08 H2. Its a fixer upper and he contacted me about finding out the mileage on the vehicle. Here's the deal, its got some problems, the cluster is dead but the vehicle runs. The past owner said he thinks the mileage is "somewhere" around 130K but the cluster hasn't worked for a couple of years and the H2 has been sitting for at least a year.
So he asked me if any of my scan tools can read the mileage out of the cluster or any other module in the H2. Obviously the H2 stores mileage in the cluster but is there a copy of the same information somewhere else since the cluster is dead, like the BCM or some other location. I looked around on both my Tech 2 and my Xtools D9 pro and I didn't see anything that was obvious.
I would hate to take the wind out of his sails but unless he just wants to believe the seller (which might not be a good idea) plus he won't be able to register it with a broken odo it might be one of those things he need to pass on. Short of him buying or sending out the cluster after he purchases it I unfortunately had nothing to offer him. Suggestions, Comments?

Run the VIN on one of the free sites, it should give you the inspection data which should include the millage
Ran my 1996 K1500 and it was within 10000 miles, actually within 7000 miles of current,

Great idea Neal, thx,
He did that and said the last mileage listed was 80k, which was the mileage when the current owner bought it years ago. He's gonna buy a carfax for it to see if there are any more entries and also to see if its been in any accidents. He's really hot to buy it so a $45.00 investment at this point is not bad for some piece of mind.
He's gonna have to pay a bunch more to get it back where it needs to be anyway for a regular driver. I told him he should join this forum to see what challenges awaits him with Hummer ownership. lol

Seems the mileage is only stored in an EEPROM in the cluster, looked today with a Tech 2, the only module holding the data was the "Instrument Panel Cluster" doesn't appear to be anywhere else.
The cluster may need to be functional to read the odometer value, however it's stored in an EEPROM so most likely still intact.
Most likely would need some electronic work to rectify.

on my 03 when i tested a used cluster it displayed the donor milage but it would not change when driven i had to swap eeproms from my cluster to the donor one for it to accrue miles again so there is something being stored in another module to check sum the correct milage. i do not know about an 08 cluster though but pretty sure it would be similar.
I'll have to do some research but seems like I remember reading somewhere that you needed SPS to see it, like correcting the VIN in a replacement Module.
Going form memory so may be wrong,

I have an MDI-2 with the SDS software but I have never really got into it because I always used the Tech-2 with the TIS-2000 software for programming. I think I played with it before and it required a GM subscription which I never bought.
If HummerZ is right, (and he usually is) this mileage thing could be a real problem if he cant get the original cluster to work or have the e-prom transferred to another cluster he could be stuck with an inop odo.
I do know in the past I had an 07 Escalade that had a cluster go bad, I swapped it out with one I picked up out of the salvage yard while I had the original fixed. The mileage picked up the value from the replacement cluster and worked fine, So, maybe the Hummer is a little different. When I re-installed the fixed cluster the mileage when back to the mileage that was in it before it was removed and sent out for repair.
So I had free mileage while the replacement cluster was in place (which wasn't for long). I still have a cluster from and 06 H2 in my parts bin but I am almost positive the pinouts would be different plus its the old canbus system where the 08 is the newer one.
He's tried to contact a GM dealer but there are no more "REAL" H2 mechanics who really know the inner working of this subject and recommended a speedo repair shop. I would really like to help him out if I can but he might just have to make a decision based on the condition of the H2 and forget the mileage for now, this one is tough as it really affects the value.
Worst case scenero, I guess he could get another cluster and set it to the last documented mileage and hope when its installed it will work and clock mileage.

Would be nice to get hold of a scrap cluster to reverse-engineer, a complete electronic/pcb/component.3D-model would be help diagnosing cluster issues.
Seems 2003 & 2004 clusters are different to 2005 upwards (battery light staying on issue) swapping eeprom's should be quite straightforward.
