Default Up to date GPS for '05 Hummer

The factory GPS in my '05 Hummer SUT works fine, but to say the least it's antiquated using the old DVD disk that can not be updated any longer. Can anyone suggest a manufacturer that makes an in-dash modern and upgradeable GPS unit for '05 Hummers? I drove to Atlanta last summer in a rented vehicle and that GPS was awesome! It sure would be great to have an upgraded GPS in my hummer.

Built in - most good aftermarket brands offer a model or two with built in GPS. I use a Kenwood DNX693 in mine. Love it - the built in GPS in the Kenwoods is Garmin too. If you are creative you can also get an adapter and repurpose the Onstar GPS antenna for the aftermarket head unit, can also repurpose the Onstar mic as well for handsfree bluetooth. Would need the head unit, install kit, harness adapter (retains use of the factory Bose amp, chimes, etc), and steering wheel controls adapter. Going to cost some $$$ though.

Another option is many of the aftermarket units have some sort of smart phone screen mirroring or Android Auto which lets you use the GPS in your phone in screen. No clue on Apple stuff as I've never had an iPhone but I'm pretty sure those have a very similar ability depending on the head unit.

I would definitely go the route of screen mirroring your phone to the head unit. Google maps is the best and you don't have to worry about manually updating. If I could go back I would get a head unit that does it.

I'd not say Google maps is the "best". That depends on where you are and that you have good cell coverage and dont mind using data. Get off the beaten path, something I very often do, Google fails, especially if the cellular coverage is poor or non-existent. Garmin also has add on maps for off-road, waterways, parks, etc. In high cellular coverage areas Google does win, especially for quick detour suggestions due to traffic or accidents, construction, etc. Saved me quite a bit of time on more than one occasion. Garmin does have a traffic functionality as well but it is subscription and it is depending on radio stations broadcasting the data. On being very detailed about what certain things look like such as interstate exits, etc, Garmin takes the win with their split screen lane assist views. On route planning Google generally picks a faster route, win for Google. Unless of course you want the slower scenic route. Garmin maps must be manually updated and depending on the device map updates are pricey unless it is an LM (lifetime maps) model which as far as I am aware only is available on certain dedicated Garmin brand GPS units so win for Google since it is live streaming data it is always updated.

hummer_on_fumes - if your head unit has an HDMI video input its possible there is a USB add on you can get for your phone for wired screen mirroring or possibly some other work around. Usually also need to get a force screen rotation app as well though for mirroring and it can be a pain versus Android Auto capabilities.

AZ grows too damn fast for in dash navigation even on our newer vehicles roads still aren't shown as they are built. Cell phone with google maps all the way. Not many people are taking their H2s out and beating on them much anymore. I just bluetooth my navigation from my phone to the H2 audio system so I can hear the audio.
