Default Snow Tire / Snow Driving Advice

I'm a Hummer noob. Our H2 has BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tired. Treads are almost about half worn. I recently took a nice slide in black ice. In other areas I expected the H2 to have a little bit better traction than my 2015 BMW X5 (xdrive). I suspect the tires are a factor. What tires should I get? Or are these tires fine for now?

The spare tire (probably original) is cracked - should it be replaced? Most of my tires sensors are going / gone bad so when I get new tires I will also get the sensors replaced.

Also - in snow/slush/ice what 4x4 mode should I be in? Thanks very much for all of your help.

NEVER ATTEMPT TO DRIVE ON THAT SPARE!
ALL tires slide on "black ice"! Your tires on the ground don't look worn out(15/32 new), yet I see cracking in the tread. What's the production date on the DOT#'s & tread depth on those? My Grabber A/T(new16/32)tires are at 13/32 and still performing like new.

My spare date is 2907 (It's a 2008 H2, that' makes it Original lol).

Other tire date codes are 4915, 0116, 0916, and 3317. My treads are about 10/32 to 11/32.

My thought is to replace all 4 tires, and recycle the 3317 to be the new spare. The 3317 has some small lines/cracks, nothing like the spare though.

Where are you located with Tire Dry Rot in a short time? Also, why are your tires almost 2yrs apart: 49th week 2015, 1st week 2016, 9th week 2016, and 33rd week 2017, when were they mounted? My tires are matching 0514 (5th week 2014) without dry rot! On a side note, tires need to be stored in a climate controlled environment before installation.

We just bought this H2 about 3 months ago. It spent several years in Southern California. Before that it spent its early years in South Carolina. I have no idea why the tires have such varying dates on them.

I would buy 5 new ones., I had 3/4 tread on my 10 year old tires, I sold the 4 of them to a guy in an off road club that wanted them, strictly off road,so he was fine with the old dated tires. I first held off on the spare and only bought 4, but decided to buy the 5th tire a few months later, I went with the BFG's again, but if I drove in lots of snow, I would have opted for GoodYear Duratracs.

Agreed that the current original spare is really no longer safe to use with cracks that big in the tread areas. ON the current tires, there is some cracking but does not appear to be severe. Also as mentioned, no tires are going to have good traction on solid ice. Even in basic snow slush some patchy ice for the most part the main 4hi mode should be fine but if conditions are getting pretty thick and slippery then maybe 4hi Lock. Just be aware that any of the "locked" 4WD modes are not for dry pavement and to switch back to regular 4hi.

Tires - lots of opinions on those. The BFG All Terrains you have are very highly rated but some others are as well.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm getting 5 new BFG All-Terrains and am replacing the sensors in the 4 tires. 1 is dead/broken (possible battery), the others constantly read 5-8lbs too low. I reset/relearned the sensors but get the same results.

Make sure to check/insist on the most recent production dates.
All the shops I've worked monitored the production dates, any that reached the max timeline on the shelf(12-18months) were pulled and shipped back!

Thanks for the tip! I spoke to the shop and they will check the dates when the tires come in tomorrow. He mentioned that many tires are back-ordered and unavailable, so he suspects the dates should be good as most of the stale inventory disappeared a while back.
