Removal/install of Hummer U Steps
#2
There are welded pins on each step with a big screw and plastic ****. The pins to in the rock rails and the ****/screw is used to tighten each step down and prevent them from coming off. I would not use the *****, buy some Grade 8 or better bolts and slather the hell out of them with red loctite so no one can steal them.

Pins on the end of the screw doesn't make sense to me. There are 3 pins going through each step which lock into the rock rails. The fourth pin place is where the large threaded screw with the plastic **** goes to secure the step. I can try to get pics if you need them.

The steps have three pins that go into the rock rails under the doors. The plastic handled threaded rods screw into the step through the rock rail. Most of the steps I have seen have the threaded handle which is made of mild steel actually corrode into the aluminum step. I had to break off most of the plastic handles trying to turn them off. If you can get the screw out i would recommend greasing the threads to keep them from corroding together. Aluminum and steel do not like to be threaded together. This galvanic corrosion is common for aluminum and ferris metals. I had to cut off most of the plastic handles and could not get the threads out of the alumiunum so I just used a nut on the threads sticking out of the step.
