Recommendations Please New Head Unit
I have a 2005 H2. I want to replace my OEM Navigation with a new Head Unit with Navigation. I want to use OEM speakers and retain Steering Wheel Controls. Anything out there that will work with factory amp and speakers ?
How much are you willing to spend? What features are important? Just navigation and steering wheel controls? DVD/CD? Do you have rear entertainment? I would 100% recommend carplay/android auto.
I had installed a pioneer unit and all controls are working through it, microphone connection, steer wheel, rear view camera and even my Garmin dashcam is working through it.
Not sure what model Pioneer it is but will take a look tomorrow when I get back at the shop.
I replaced mine in a 2006 with an Apple CarPlay unit so I could easily I integrate my phone. That was about 7 years ago. I put a new amp in for a subwoofer under the back seats. Its been working great.
Pick whatever brand double din head unit floats your boat. I went with Kenwood DNX 693S (older model now but still excellent). For me I wanted a unit that still had an actual volume ****. Then I went with the Metra GMOS-04 and the Metra steering wheel adapter. After some trial and error getting the steering wheel controls going all works perfect. Including soldering a new 1/8" mono jack onto the factory onstar microphone wires, and installing a GT5-1S (this is the type that Kenwood and several other brands use) connector onto the factory onstar GPS cable. Both of these also work perfect. In fact the GPS works better not then it did in another car with the Kenwood GPS antenna. It found a lock on the satellites which I was still in the shop. Of course some other brand might use a different GPS antenna connector if you get some unit with GPS but these days most people just rely on their phone for GPS.
Works great using the factory Onstar mic in the ceiling for hands free calling which is slick.
When you have the center stack bezel and stereo out, you can cut a tiny bit of plastic to the upper left of the stereo pocket to run wires and behind/above the 4WD buttons there is a nice pocket perfect for tucking the adapter modules (the GMOS-04 and steering wheel control adapters) out of the way.

That makes it easy. Kenwood makes the best in my opinion. Sony is also good. I have a ddx9 something (the new one). Find one on crutchfield you like the look of. They should all support steering wheel controls with an adapter. Not sure of the adapter for your year but i imagine it exists.
