Default Rear parking brake / brake dust shield / axle removal

So my H2 had no parking brake when the pedal was pressed. I pulled the rear rotors and it looks like the previous owner adjusted the parking brakes alll the way in because the disk brake dust shields were so rusted that they were bent in and had pieces of rust /metal in the parking brake assembly area preventing free movement.. It looks like one parking brake had been dragging on the inside of the drum or rusted to it at one time.

So my questions are: : can you replace the dust shields without pulling the axle? I saw some two piece ones dorman ones dvertised but am unsure if they work for the H2, it looks like they are sandwiched in between the axle and caliper mount?

Also, I have searched for info on the H2 parking brake system and how to remove it. The service manual calls for pulling the rear axles to get access. The only videos I could find online are all for the chevy one piece circular pad system, not the 2 shoe setup like on the h2.

Last, how had is it to pull the rear axles? I have done headers / tune ups / brakes/ radiators before, but never messed with the differential or axles.

Thanks!

the removal would probably be the same as in the videos you have seen. remove caliper and bracket remove rotor then draining and removal of the rear diff cover. releasing a screw and pulling the pin then remove the axel retainer clip. then need to check the outer seals for leaks as pulling the axels might damage them.

Well this is turning into a royal pita. I couldnt get axle c clips out because the wheel speed sensors blocked sliding them into the differential enough to release them.. The wheels speed sensors were rusted in the hub so broke when getting them out. Replacements are $200 EACH! anybody have a line on a set of good used ones?

At this point, I'm considering getting a used axle to swap in, when you add up $400 in new speed sensors and $100 in backing plates the cost evens out.

The brake backing plate mounts are rusted pretty bad and are a discontinued part (GM 88965731) so I dont know my options for replacing those if I continue to rebuild my axle.. I found this one

ACDelco 15949892 GM Original Equipment Rear Parking Brake Anchor Backing Plate Kit with Plate and Shield

which looks pretty close, the parking brake cable bracket appears to be a little different, says fits a 2500hd. Anyone know if it will work?

Well I am making progress. The AC Delco 1594892 does indeed fit the 2004 hummer H2, and ordering this part which comes with a shield, and a whole parking brake mounting bracket with new bolts installed is the same cost as just ordering a replacement brake shield!. The parking brake levers on both side of the Hummer were rusted in one position and the shields were non existant. I did new axle seals while I was in there, although they looked fine, and have the new mounting plates and parking brake hardware ready to mount. Still cant swallow the cost for the new wheel speed sensors

I do need some help on rear differential reassembly for those who have done it! With all my trying to get the axles out, I had to move the ring gear around after I had the pin out, and the two pinion gears which are across from each other fell out. Do I have to take the whole ring gear and carrier out of the differential to get the two pinions gears back in and re-aligned or is it just a lot of trial and error trying to get them lined up in the differential and then slide the pin back in? I tried to watch some videos but and still unclear on this - thanks!

what year is your H2? it says that part number is good for 2006-2009 H2 also was it the complete assembly with brakes and springs or just the back plate assembly as as you have pictured in the 4th pic.
https://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/ca...parttype=14437
for the other issue. if they came out without removing anything they should go back in also the same way but post a picture

Mines a 2004. Parts manual said the brake backing plate for 2004 was discontinued, so I tried this one. Couldn't see any differences from the part I took off and the parking brake / disc shield which is attached has the same part number on it for 02-08.

15949892 comes as an assembly with a new bracket / mount which bolts directly to the axle flande, 4 new bolts pressed into the bracket and the new parking brake mounting plate/disc brake dust shield.

nice but does it come with the brake pad assembly as in the 5th pic. what your shouting above does not determine if it does. if you look up the part number it just shows the back plate assembly . being an assembly it comes with the bracket and bolts. a yes it came as pic4 or no it came as pic 5 would have sufficed. no need to shout. that would be useful for others in your circumstance latter down the road,

It's just the font I copied then part number in. No shouting intended. The brake pads, parkimg brake lever assembly and a parking brake hardware pack are the 3 items needed to get it to the point of the picture...
