New Steering Box
Does anyone know the best place to source a steering box and/or have one rebuilt? Mine is leaking bad right above the pitman arm. I’ve heard bad luck with aftermarket stuff but i don’t know where to find an oem.
Also found out the pitman arm is bad. Will replace with kryptonite stuff as always.

Is this a hard job to do in the driveway? Obviously the box will have to come out. The whole thing is covered in fluid. I’d like to do all the seals on it if possible.
Update: I think I’ll be able to rebuild this. But id rather source a whole box if possible, but there are NONE. They don’t exist. I assume there can’t be anything different than the one used on every 2007.5+ 2500hd truck. But I can’t find part numbers or anything. Every parts store comes up blank. Only option I can find is the expensive redhead ones.
How the hell do I find one of these?

With more research I’ve found that 08/09 share the exact same steering box as every 2007.5+ 2500hd truck. You just can’t find them when searching by vin or year/make/model anywhere.
Also just opted for the redhead steering box anyway with a Kryptonite pitman arm. Factory box is a 3 turn so I got a 3 turn. I’ll update on how good it works when I get it in.

I went with the redhead for mine but then my psteering pump was a little weak so after researching I found some model Chevy van that had an extra vane or two to give me enough pressure. It was perfect. I also used all kypronite parts and they are unbeleivable.

Do you have an 03-07 with the hydroboost brakes? They redid the hydraulic system with electric brakes so I'm hoping the pump on it will be enough. I hope so because I really do not want to buy more parts lol.
Gavin, you should be happy with the RedHead box, I purchased one a number of years ago for a 97 Tahoe project I was doing.
RedHead makes a bullet proof box but you do pay the price for that. As far as the pump is concerned GM lists the same power
steering pump for the 07 and prior as they do for the 08 so even though GM dumped the hydroboost in 08 the fluid volume and pressure should be the same. You can always play around with the shims in the pump to raise the pressure if needed.

My dad built this truck when he bought it 6 or so years ago. Bought a whole kryptonite steering kit, pitman, idler, center link, Tie rods. Local shop put them on. my dad said it was still loose(inch of play in the steering). Shop said he was crazy and its the tightest 2500 they've driven. Come to find out this week, they did everything but the pitman arm, and it is sloppy.
