Most common problems with H2's

Recently purchased H2. What problems, are pretty common in H2s? Any recommendations, add ons, etc? Thanks.

BIGT2148 02-05-2010 09:52 AM

Water pump may give u trouble around 80k.

You can zap your speedos if you change your battery. I did it.

Other than that, thats all that has happened to me.

VegasGuy 02-05-2010 12:43 PM

Power mirrors on 2003 - 2005 (2006?).

medic/z28 02-06-2010 02:09 PM

WHat happens with mirrors?

calif phil 02-06-2010 03:24 PM

They wont power fold in like they were supposed to. The 2006 up mirrors are what most people install when they go bad.

redtank 02-08-2010 08:20 AM

I experienced the mirrors not folding in the other day.

redtank 02-09-2010 08:08 AM

thanks, for the tip

medic/z28 02-09-2010 01:26 PM

They fold in or tilt down as you reverse in garage? Im still trying to find out more stuff about my H2. The wife hogged it so I don't drive it much.

redtank 02-09-2010 04:48 PM

They fold in with the touch of a button. So, if you are at a car wash or park on the street, you can fold them in. But you can preset your side view mirrors to go down as you park in reverse, so you can see the lines. I tried this, and didn't like, due to the fact the truck is so high, I need the mirrors to guide me, so I don't back into another vehicle, like a prius, lol. Then again, would that be such a bad thing. Jk.

hummerfamily 02-10-2010 08:04 AM

well I don't know what all the fuss is, My H2 has worked perfectly everytime, Heck I don't even change the oil...... just kidding, only a few minor things but not much more than any other car.

ipeefreely 02-11-2010 11:56 AM

2005 H2 here... Haven't had a single issue yet since I bought it new... *knock on wood* :D

redtank 02-13-2010 07:00 AM

When driving at around 70, I tend to hear a rattling inside, near the passenger side dashboard area and the driver side dashboard area. Tried a few things, but still haven't fixed the problem.

medic/z28 02-16-2010 11:47 AM

Oh man and you just got it, too. Good luck finding the issue! I washed and waxed mine yesterday for the first time in the garage. It took forever masking everything with tape to not get wax on black plastic pieces, the bitch looks awesome!!!

redtank 02-16-2010 12:00 PM

Yeah, definitely sucks...u have any pics u can post of your H2?

The rattle you are hearing is caused by the black plastic trim on the outside edges of your windshield. Remove them and run a bead of RTV silicone close to where the edge of the plastic meets the windshield and put them back on. Wait a couple hours for it to set up and take it for a spin. This was a VERY common problem and most of the trucks got fixed at the dealer under warranty.

Masking tape????????? To wax your truck!!!!!!!!! Are you crazy??????

I use that new wax called "Ice" and put it on EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It leaves no wax marks or white residue on anything!!!!!! I put it on ALL of the plastic parts, fender trim, bumpers, and everything.

emillika 02-22-2010 08:52 AM

1. Windshield wiper circuit board
2. Cab lights always pop-up and cause a hissing noise at speed
3. Rusted side steps
4. Mirrors as described earlier

Overall VERY happy owner of a 2004 model with about 50k miles.

Common Probs

'04, Speedo gauge replacement, climate control actuator replacement (the hard one on top), when it rains the wipers sometimes come on themselves and the seat heat on the drivers' side cycles until things dry out. Guessing moisture gets in the wiring somewhere. Amazing what you can get used to.

UpCarbonCredits 03-13-2010 01:23 AM

I have owned my 05 H2 for about 4 years.(50000 miles) Overall its been great. My Problem areas have been

Windshield wiper circuit board short from moisture replaced (common problem)
Tach isn't reading Correctly replacing Cluster
Door Lock Switch Short

That's a pretty inclusive list Boss. It would be helpful if other members could pitch in and let prospective Hummer owners know which years are affected. For example, the mirror folding problem only affects 2003 to 2005. I know the wiper issue was fixed, but I am not sure of the year. 2005?

I do not recall the fuel pump being a common problem. And what is #6? Can't find the wiper motor?

I would also add that the air bag suspension seems to come up on this forum with some regularity.

theboss 03-13-2010 05:49 PM

yeah thats my foul i posted all the problems i heard of some recalls but never got anything fixed at the dealer since my vin number was never on the list

but i google the factory alarm issue and some h2 2005 have that problem

medihummer 03-16-2010 05:02 PM

have a 2006 and had oil pump issue no oil pressure any more had to replace it

had a transmission problem but put on a magnuson charger.
replaced it with 4l80 and changed gears to 4.88/1
very nice specs now

Good one!

Here's another: People automatically assume I'm a Republican. (I'm not.)

medic/z28 03-18-2010 02:08 PM

Im not (republican) either but I didn't vote for that guy. I normally try and see who has the better plan. Two months and no issues yet. I did do intake and exhaust. Runs awesome and I'm getting 13mpg! 90% highway

This is a thread for "most common" problems. First time I've heard that one. Maybe I missed all the other door lock problem posts.

cybordolphin 04-09-2010 12:37 AM

2004

1) Oil pump supposedly went out (no pressure) $1500 (have to drop front axle).

2) Won't shift out of park (fixed myself) - you have to remove shifter handle and lift center plastic console up to view detached wire (usually black). Then resolder. If it happens at a bad time (no time is good), you can lift the center console and feel for the "button" and push that in and shift into drive. That will get you home.

3) Back utility plug does not work (not a fuse either).

4) Speedo and tach have gone out (wacky-never can tell speed).

5) Alarm failed and locked us out. (fixed under warranty).

6) Drivers side fluds when it rains and Hummer is left outside.

are you sure fuel pump is the culprit with your ride?? nothing else as per your service advisor. just let me know of any developments.

My Problems

Windshield washer pump comes on by itself some times but only when its raining. I assume water is getting in some where. I have a vibration at low speed can not feel it, just hear it. Replaced the fuel cap and still get an error message that says tighten fuel cap. That's my list folks.

She rocks!

Do a search on this site and you will find it was a factory defect that is covered by a recall. My H2 is fine, but others say they got it fixed at no cost to them.

TerrySW 04-24-2010 05:07 PM

Thanks

Thank you VegasGuy. Will check it out for sure.

KenCoollest 05-01-2010 10:08 AM

Ohly problem so far is lighters not working I replace R44 fuse but they still don't work
I'm going to take it to the dealer, hope its covered under warranty.

Cover for windshield wiper motor

Took the 98k Hummer to the dealer for some service today - they saw the windshield wiper cover problem as a recall and replaced it. Alas, the motor itself was bad too, which meant I paid for that. But the recall works no matter the year! Get it fixed.

2006 H2 63000 miles:

Replaced Starter about 55k
Just Replaced:

Idler Arm
Pitman Arm
Wheel Bearings
Power Steering pump

At 63K. But it was all under waranty luckily.

Just an FYI

parabat 04-20-2011 01:46 PM

Hello.

I've had the main bearing on the front diff go twice now. I was told by my local shop that this is a common defect on the H-2 and other large SUV's:cool:

madmike 04-21-2011 04:36 AM

fuel pump noisy with low fuel. Added Lucas fuel treatment to lube it. Dramatic drop in noise. Driver mirror not folding. Front bearings went out. Not hard to replace. Other than that, solid vehicle. 2003 H2.

I would be happy to look into this further for you. In order to do so, I will need the VIN for the vehicle. You can either contact me here on the thread or via private message. I look forward to hearing from you.

Tricia, GM Customer Service.
