Instrument Cluster Question (Panel Console Dash)
Not sure what the official terminology is but I'll go with "Instrument Cluster" for now (correct terminology helps searching forum threads)
Does anyone know if the cluster is "tied" in some way to the ECU / Control system? I guess what I'm asking is can the Instrument Cluster be replaced / swapped out? From what I have learned I would say it can, just looking for confirmation. Any help much appreciated. |
Yes it can be replaced no problem. One catch though - the mileage is stored in the cluster. You will either have to live with the mileage on the cluster you get or send it off to a specialist and have it programmed with the mileage you tell them to. You will need to probably give them a letter stating the mileage is exact. Otherwise you will need to indicate on a future bill of sale that the correct mileage is unknown.
Any cluster from a GM pickup or SUV for the same generation 2003 through 2007 will plug right in and work. Keep in mind though, only the HD trucks, Escalades, and Denali's will have the transmission temp gauge and they will probably not have a white face (if yours does - my 2003 does). The Escalade ones can look pretty nice too. I put one in my GMC pickup. They tend to be pretty pricey though. If you are patient you can eventually nab one on eBay or a local junkyard for a hundred bucks or so though. If yours is getting flaky on some of the gauges its just a matter of opening it up and soldering in new stepper motors. Plenty of tutorials online on the various GM truck forums as well as other tricks like replacing the lighting, etc too. If you do not want to tackle it yourself there are a number of places on eBay and probably on your local craigslist who will repair the cluster for you as well with all new stepper motors and LED lights. |
Ah interesting.
Actually its my friend, he had a new cluster and his Transmission Guage wasnt working and so he thought it was faulty. His was quite a late model year, could it be that he has no transmission temp to display, i.e. its not faulty? |
Possible but even if the stepper motor for the trans temp gauge needs replacing it is pretty simple and cheap.

Agreed. There is about one million youtube videos on replacing stepper motors in GM clusters. I have had mine apart multiple times to change LEDs and other things and it is very simple. The solder pads are good size so anyone could easily swap out the motors.

03 H2 Instrument Cluster Failure
New here guys and have a question regarding the 2003 H2 Instrument cluster. I've searched the other posts where they talk about individual instruments having trouble and replacing the one little piece in the back of the panel to get the gauge working, but every instrument has failed, including the digital readout at the base. The truck runs, drives and shifts normally, just no indication of which gear you are in, rpm's, speed, fuel level (which is a problem), or any of the other indicators. I'm not saying that they couldn't fail all at once, but the digital portion at the bottom is throwing me off. I've checked fuses and relays and anything I can find that deals with instruments and I can't resolve the issue. It was fine one day and out the next. Any thoughts or direction (outside of taking it to the dealership) are greatly appreciated. Don't really want to spend $500+ dollars to repair as all of the gauges were working fine and we have never had any trouble before this with intermittent readings, sticking or pegging out, or being blank.
Thanks guys. |

Sounds like some bad solder joints on the circuit board. They can be re soldered but keep in mind, these are very tiny SMD devices and soldering them is not easy unless you have experience with that sort of tiny work. Then again I'm not certain because the bad solder joints usually present as intermittent problems, particularly with the display section which will often get very dim when there are bad solder joints. With the entire cluster dead I'd be inclined to think something else is amiss like a broken wire, lost ground, or a pin backed out of a connector or something. Attached is a pinout for the cluster and you can find plenty of photos online of them opened up from the other GM trucks that all use the same cluster (just some have different trim and some do not have a trans temp guage). The pinout could help troubleshoot it.

Its very unlikely that every stepper and the display have failed.
Quickly googling I came across this link which seems to be a similar fault to yours. Hopefully one day I'll get hold of a spare/scrap instrument cluster and make a full circuit analysis as DIC faults are a common and we could do with the info. I have changed some sufrace-mount components on my friend's 2006 and regret not getting into it further and taking more pics etc. MixManSC's diagram would be a good starting point particurlarly the +Ve voltages on pins B11 and B9 and the ground connections to A12+B12, these would be easy to check. Also without the IPC Serial Data on pin A6 there may be little or no activity though I suspect the DIC would at least do something when energised. Sounds like power-loss/PCB fault. |
Thank you both. That definitely gives me a good starting point. I appreciate it.
