Default How much steering play is acceptable?

Everything under the truck after the steering box is nice and tight and in good condition. The truck tracks straight down the road and doesn't wander. All of the steering components were replaced with kryptonite stuff a few years back. I still have about 1.5 to 2 inches of play in the wheel where it does nothing. I can wiggle the wheel back and forth while driving and not move. I tightened the bolts at the top of the steering column and it took about 1/4" out. The rest of the joints are fine and the only play seems to be in the steering box. Is this something that adjusting the screw on the box can fix? Or does it just need a whole new one. Its done this since we got it with not a whole lot of miles on it, but I've been looking around and it seems like it might not be normal.

The reason I'm asking is because the adjustment screw is a pain to get to. It would require taking the electric fans out, removing oil cooler lines, transmission cooler lines, and a bunch of stuff. If I adjust it I'll probably just drill a hole in the fan shroud just large enough to stick an alan key through.
