check your valve covers for leaks
the oil pressure sender on the top rear drivers side head area under the intake
and the oil cooler line plate over the engine oil filter while there make sure the oil filter is tight and installed properly
you will have to clean up all the old oil to check the underside to see if the oil pan gasket is leaking as well as the oil cooler plate and oil filter

I was told it could be the rear main seal as well. Because I have oil dripping on both sides near the top of the oil pan.

Nobody can tell from those photos where your leak is.

First thing you have to do is degrease and pressure wash the engine (carefully) form top to bottom.

Only then do you look for leaks.

If the leak is no obvious at this point, you buy some UV oil tracer (make sure you get the one for oil and not for water soluble liquids like coolant) from your local auto parts stoe, grab a cheapo UV light (black light) flashlight from Harbor Freight, and go to town on the vehicle.

Easy peasy.

If your H3 has the 5.3 there is a distinct possibility that your oil sending unit is leaking. The ones GM used on the V8 LS motors are notaris for leaking where the aluminum based is crimped around the plastic. When the leak occurs is drips onto the top of the engines and seeps down the rear then accumulates where the engine joins up with the tranny. I had this occur on my 06 and was thinking the same as you. I don't know where the located the oil sender is on the 5 cylinder engines but my guess is not on top.

If you do have a 5.3 grab or borrow an inspection camera and check at the rear of the intake, find the sender and look where it screws into the block, if its the culprit it will be very obvious. There are a ton of you tube on how to replace it without having to remove the intake. Hope that's it as it will be an easy a low cost issue to resolve.

(sorry about the H3 H3 confusion,) I was on the H3 forum before reading your post) As I had mentioned in my previous answer I had this problem on my 06 H2, both the LQ4 and L92 engines are documented to have this problem. An inspection camera will easily confirm or rule this out.

If it is something else (ie valve covers, rear plate on the back of the engine, rear main, oil pan,,,) as others have mentioned your gonna have to get under there with a pressure cleaner first and get it nice a clean. Then use a dye in the oil with a UV light.

One question that might help how long has this been going on, did this just recently start and how many miles is on the engine.
