Default Factory Onstar Mic with aftermarket headunit

I just picked up a new to me 06 H2, will post pics soon. I'm trying to update the head unit. I have factory nav with the Y91 bose system and rear seat entertainment. I spoke to Crutchfield already and they recommended a pioneer unit I'm not to interested in the alibaba tesla screen. The question I have is has anyone been able to retain the factory microphone that works through onstar. I don't want to run an aftermarket one and I swear I saw a forum post about retaining it before. The user said you should be able to just twist the wires together and Solder a 3.5mm jack? Also if it is possible to retain this microphone can I still remove the onstar VCIM to put the cubby in. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks

Being in the Pro audio business (Retired) I can tell you that there are mainly two different types of mic's. One being dynamic and the other which is an electric consorter mic. The condenser mic requires (In Pro Audio..48 volts DC )to operate and are very small. The Dynamic requires no power but are larger. Of course there are other types like ribbon and some others but chances are GM might have gone with a Condenser type that requires some sort of DC voltage to operate.

If you have access to a manual or some one here can take a look and see which they might have used. Or the other option would be to find a dynamic mic small enough to fit into that space and wire into the unit you might by.

Or use one of these ..One is the power amp board the other is the mic which you would connect:

they would have just used a standard 2 wire non powered mic. it is not for a recording studio it is for onstar.
and yes it can be converted to 1/8" mono mini jack

Has nothing to do with recording studio. It's size and and price. I've never seen a dynamic mic less then 1/2 " in diameter. I'd check the H2 manual to see what they used. Hey ...I could be wrong like I was about Wife #1 and # 2..L.O.L. They could be using a dynamic mic. BWTKDIK.

I ended up using mic provided when I updated my screen- was easy to run behind side pillar trim and across to put in the middle top console. I did not try to reuse. I am pretty fussy and thats the path I chose....

I believe now they have a similar "wireless" unit... thats how I would go. Looks great in rig.

For what it’s worth I mounted my mic behind the roof console above the mirror. Kind of tucked up between the headliner and windshield. Can’t even see it and I get great call quality.

on my 2003 the OEM mic is in the roof console behind the garage door opener buttons. (the little slots visible in the middle between the two mounting holes)

Hey Mark, I appreciate the response finally got logged back into my account. The head unit I went with ended up having a good mic built into the screen itself no need to run anything or modify the factory one. I went with an android China unit so far it works pretty good for $300 CAD I cant really complain may end up doing a full system later. I have a left over JL amp and 12inch w3 I'm avoiding putting in just because I'm tired of rattling plastics and loose screws lol
