Default DRL Restoration

After

Before

Before on the right, After sanding but before clear coat and final sand and polish on the left
As much as I wanted to upgrade the DRL's to driving lights, I have this weird obsession to bring things back to factory OEM state. So, I restored the DRLs much like you would restore headlights. Given that they are flat, they are super easy to restore using a vice to the two studs of the casing.

Step 1 Sand:
  • 500 grit sandpaper, then 850, then 1500, then 3000

Step 2 Clearcoat

  • Clean with alcohol
  • 5 coats of Rustoleum clear enamel with UV protection w/30min drying periods between the coats

Step 3 Wait

  • Wait at least 48 hours, but 3 days is best

Step 4 Sand and Polish

  • Light 1500 grit sand, then 3000 grit
  • Polish with Groits Correcting Cream using direct drive rotary buffer (not orbital)

Reinstall

I'm happy with the outcome but you decide for yourself. Total time spent; probably 2 hours. Total cost assuming you have sand paper and, correcting cream, is merely just the cost of the rattle can from Home Depot

If you are referring to the reflector; it would have to be re-silvered; however, at this point, it's a lot more economical to just to have them replaced.
