Can rear hatch w/ broken handle be opened from outside

The rear hatch handle is broken. Is the only way to open hatch from inside ? I forsee myself tearing up the cheap GM plastic gaining acess to the linkage.

Thanks for any tips

is there enough of the Handel left where you can use something to pry it open? the alternative is to break in through the inside or the outside panel. either option will cost big bucks even used since they do not make them.

didn't see much of anything left of the handle to grab or get a grip.I'll take a closer look.
I was patient an carefull removing the inside panel.so at least I have the hatch opened.will attach maybe a coat hanger for a tempuary handle.
thanks bronxteck for advice pls advice on my other thread about door and hatch handles.

I've tested the front doors electric locks they all work fine yet to test the hatch.

while cleaning the inside of H2 I found a small metal piece. I peaked though the right side of handles hole an observed a hook looking piece it's part of the linkage. it's kindof obvious what this peice is I found the other day. yet to test it w/ hatch closed but it doe's hook an moves the linkage. so the hatch handle has lower priority. still need driver side door handles.

Stick a loop made of wire or plastic in the opening on the right side (I believe) and hook the loop on the latch and pull. I did this for a while when it broke until I got a new one.

can't believe ebay thinks this part fits.the vehical it thinks it fits is actuely a sut which doesn't even have a hatch bunch of fools at ebay.
I've picked out what appears to be metal which is probably which is probaly stronger than plastic. I bet the plastic dries up gets brittle w/ sun an heat.

I believe the pin1 inserts into the black piece. the black piece & spring is still attached so it mit be easier to reuse black piece.
not sure but think the handle pivots where it attachs to black piece.

not sure but think pin2 holds middle of black piece?
I have a feeling there won't be any instructions. I bet the other end isn't attached to anything ? thanks for any tips.

Rusty I found a piece of bent metal in console an figured out it was the rear hatch handle.

breaking into a H2 is to easy come in though the rear.

I've sean this same chrome handle somewhere else for $39. shipped.

I dont have a pick but its obvious that hooked lever pulls the cable to release the latch.

A metal handle, if available might be good but an OEM plastic one should also be fine and probably would not be a problem again for 10+ years.

One thing I did learn on mine was to use the hatch handle gently, pull towards the right end of the handle, and only pull it enough to open the hatch enough to then grab the hatch itself to lift it up. I think most end up broken because of people yanking the crap out of them, pulling the handle at an angle using it to lift the hatch further up, and having bad struts on the hatch which increases the weight and need to pull the handle even harder. You can see below this thread some other threads where others have also had issues. Another even more common issue is the entire plastic pocket around the handle cracking - many have fixed that with bolts to strengthen it.

yes I agree w/ all you say exspecially about being gentle I assume thats how the door handles get snapped off. pll think the H2 is a tank so they treat it like one when in reality it's cheap plastic crape.

agree on the gas charged struts too which I also need to replace.

think I just figured out how handle is attached.
looking at the images pin#1 attaches to the left side of handle this is the pivot point.

w/ license plate holder still attached will I be able to remove the pin#1 c-clip I assume w/ needle nose pliers? or will this whole thing need removing?

previous thoughts are incorrect, the correct orientation of handle is right end attaches to the hooked black piece which I plan to leave attached.

so my plan is to remove pin#1 (left end of handle)
insert right end of handle into square hole and attach black pieces hook to handle.
then position left end
then insert pin#1 though handle.

pin#2 attaches black piece. thanks
