Big rock took out my windshield!
On the way home, a rock came flying diagonally from an oncoming truck tire... Look to be three or four inches diameter. Actually caved in the windshield a little.
Was prepared to pay an arm and a leg.... Safelite will be coming out to my house on Saturday, $321 installed. Can't believe it, it actually sounds reasonable. (Daughters Volvo S60 last year, $1,400 for the windshield... Her insurance picked up 900 of it)

I saw a youtube video on some guy who does windshield replacements. He was doing a HUMMER H2. It is really involved. He removed the front cowl below the windshield as well as some stuff inside. It is really involved. I would stay there and make sure they now what there doing.
Watch how involved this is..Not easy 1-2-3... Good luck. This guy talks fast and is hard to understand but he knows what he's doing.

Yeah.. I would remove it myself with a Bud. And I would get some cheap Harbor Freight cargo blankets (4X4) size to cover the dash top and seating. Unless this company has protection devices for your interior. The Hard part is removing that cowl. Also, get you one of those GM Clip pylers in case you bend those Tangs on those clips. I always put a dab of grease on the slot and clip before reinstalling. Makes removing a panel like tit's.

Since I have had (3) THREE installed in the past 4 months by Safelite.... this is what needs to happen-
Just need a #2 phillips screwdriver to remove 6 screws & a torx for the rearview mirror.
1. Remove 2 square fake duct trim pieces on cowl, they come up & off (held on by 4 clips) simply by pulling straight up- beware they do not fly across the room when pulling straight up.
2 Remove the 2 pillar trims (L) & (R) need to come off . Pull back door seal thats lipped on bottom to expose the pillar trim screws (remove the door seal up to where the pillar trim can come off clearly), remove screws on each & most likely RTV/silicone on windshield side (that was put on since new that stopped the rattle at highway speeds) IF it does not lift off once the screws are out- slide a putty knife (or something thin & flat) under the trim from windshield side to break free any adhesive that may have been previously applied to them. Trim adhesive can be used on reinstall if the gaskets slightly deformed in top corner.... (both parts the pillar trim & door seal are obsolete, BE GENTLE).
3. Remove both wiper arms (rotate clip & pull straight off)
4. Cowl. Held on by 2 screws, some plastic pushpins and 4 clips on backside of cowl. ( ),1 screw under each square duct L&R you removed in step 1, Once the 2 screws & pushpins are out -Cowl WILL pull up from the 4 clips on backside. Disconnect the washer hose & set the entire cowl aside. You may wish to order a couple clips ahead of time (link attached above), high probability you will need at least 1 on reinstall...
5. Disconnect electrical plug & remove your rear view mirror on inside of rig by loosening 1 screw. Torx T15 if I remember correctly?....
Safelite did mine 3 times ( the second was leak in top left, drivers side, corner that let water pour in). Literally was done the second time within days of install. The third time literally within 2 months was a rock hit like yours, was gutted. So Since July - done 3 times.
While you have cowl off - check the little "door" for the air intake (square black plastic piece). If the gasket is shot- now is the time to also RTV/Silicone that,
Every time a windshield is replaced now- you are dealing with 20 year old plastic parts & the door gasket that are no longer made new..... MAKE SURE THEY KNOW HOW TO REMOVE THE PARTS WITHOUT BREAKING THEM.
Good luck with no leaks.....again, let them know be gentle & to be aware of top corners for potential leak areas.... Again, will be a replacement windshield as OEM also no longer available....FUYAO is probably going to be the brand installed...
When reinstalling the pillars add a tad bit of RTV to the pillar trim (stop hwy speed rattling).
I have had 4 H2's over past 20+ years - I have had probably no less than 12 windshields installed - 2 had to be redone right after installs for leaks in top left corner area. I am going to make a guess of why the high failure rate (as someone above also had a redo). These windshields are so wide- if this is done by a single tech the leaks have happened on drivers side top corner while using the arm for install..... Its almost better I think with our H2's to have 2 people on the glass install - one on each side to place it in position... Maybe not, but I have had 2 redone by safelite single person installs....something to ask tech about when he/she arrives. After install wait a few days & run a garden water hose along top of windshield and watch for any leaks inside, don't spray it hard, just let water flow out of hose along top roof edge... if it leaks will be obvious inside. Both of mine that leaked were that obvious and found on first day of driving in rain, Safelite did the hose test where it failed miserably & leaked like a sieve.....before replacing one under warranty, that was tech installed at my residence a week or so earlier...
ALSO- IF your windshield is a FUYAO brand- Make sure the tech uses adhesive on the top black trim seal on new windshield....IF he/she does NOT make sure this factory installed black top trim piece is not SECURELY fastened to windshield- it MAY blow off your vehicle as you are driving within 1 month of install.....
Safelite discount codes, that may or may not work- $45-50 additional discount....
