Hummer H2For those who like a little more gleam to their Hummer, the H2 offers a similar rugged look as the H1, but as a lower cost, and with more added features, making it almost a massive luxury SUV.
I bought my H2 a few years back after I got out of the service and love it. Unfortunately, I've had nothing but issues with the stock air ride suspension. After failing miserably on finding parts to keep it stock and talking my mechanic friend out of offing himself a few times due to frustration, I've decided on lifting it with a 6" inch Bulletproof kit. My interest in this actually stems from images I saw on the Fuel Offroad website when checking out wheels and tires. Essentially, I'm looking to do the same as the image I have included with this post. Does anyone have any experience with that lift system and combinations of wheels/tires? I plan on picking up Fuel Forged FF26's but am unsure what I could throw on them tire wise to avoid rubbing and trimming. I'm very new to this kind of stuff being the guy who just depended on friends to guide me. I'm in uncharted territory now and I'd really like to avoid unnecessary expensive mistakes.
Any direction or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Your mechanic friend was offing himself, with what? Just, take away the weapon and show your mechanic friend how to use GOOGLE.
Hi there,
Thank you for the reply. My "offing" himself comment was meant to be in jest and was intended to reflect the high level of frustration he/we have endured. We have changed out and programmed where applicable pretty much every part of that suspension over the last 6 months including three compressors one of which was OEM found in the back of some guys shop. I'm sure we are all aware of how long it takes to find and get parts these days plus I'm in Canada which makes it even more difficult and expensive in my opinion. Nothing has worked, we even went so far as replacing the dash switch we acquired from a wreck vehicle.
Since we decided to adopt a different approach I felt I may be able to help with inquiring with those whom have been there before or have some expertise. Things to consider, what to watch out for.. anything. That would enable me to bring him solid solutions/direction instead on my constantly relying/depending on him. Therefore, my joining and message to this community. Plus, he's old school and not to comfortable with the interweb.
In advance, thank you for any direction or advice you may be able to offer.
Yeah the rear air ride can be fickle. To properly diagnose and work with it requires a Tech2 as no other scan tool can get to the module. The Tech2 has all of the diagnostics and reclaibration, etc for it.
Aside from that - from what I've seen the lift kits are either for an H2 with air ride or for one without air ride. It sounds like you are going to throw in the towel and eliminate the air ride which many do. You can simply put coils springs in, disconnect the air ride, reset the error that comes up initially and its done and gone. Can even reduce weight and pull the compressor platform, etc out.
To lift and keep the air ride requires extending the air ride height sensor arms and putting spacers on the air springs. I did mine with 2 inch spacers myself but I still needed to use my Tech2 to deflate and recalibrate the air ride after I extended the sensor arms.
On the kit you mention, sorry but I have no advise on that. I think there is one brand of lift kit out that does not require cutting on the truck as much, most do require some permanent cutting on certain things. Not sure what brand though. The Fuel Forged wheels are nice though! I have forged Weld's on mine.
As far as fitment, offset, tire sizes, etc check this site https://www.customwheeloffset.com Go to the gallery and you will find a lot of images and specs of what others have tried and confirmed will fit.
Thanks for taking the time to offer some direction. I shared it with my buddy. He did mention he did use a Tech2, well.. we had to call and wait a few weeks for this mobile guy that travels around to different shops to do programming after he put in parts. I'm not sure why but they still couldn't get it working. Ah well, you gotta do what you gotta do. The website you referenced is pretty cool. I'm thinking that will certainly help. Fingers crossed this all comes together. I miss my truck.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond. Will post again to share how it goes.
Being one of the few who actually loves the Air-Ride-Suspension it was essential to get familiarised both mechanically and electronically.
If you've haven't given-up on it yet then ask-away, I'll do my best to help you try and fix it. Provide as much background info as possible as you can, model year, error messages, symptoms, work done etc
I'm sure MixMan will agree, a Tech2 is a good investment in any event, one can be picked-up for around $285 or even less (get one with a carry case, something I regret not having)
Hummers should come with a Tech2 built-in, now there's a thought!
Thanks again for the advice. I will certainly ask him about error messages etc. I believe he already sent back the last new compressor that we purchased. Will see where things stand.
