Default adding sandbags/weight during winter

hey guys! here in alberta i get tons of snow and ice and was thinking of putting some sandbags or other weight in my hummer h2 trunk for added traction. good idea for our trucks? if so how much weight should i add? i feel like it should be minimum 200 lbs of sand bags but optimal more like 400-500 lbs? or does it not really matter

thx

In MI we just drive in the snow, happens every year. When driving 2WD pickups for work, I would shovel some snow in the back for weight over the rear tires.

Adding weight to a vehicle that is already crazy heavy for its footprint would not accomplish anything IMHO. However, if you got stuck (and I don't know why that would happen when driving on snow bound roads) you would have sand to pour out near the tires for traction?

i was just hoping maybe the added weight would help for icey traction because we get tons of freezing rain around here

If you are on ice I'm not sure that any amount of additional weight will help. I've see a 20 ton bulldozer slide on ice before.

ahh ok very true very true, so the added weight will have no benefit? maybe it will soften my ride a bit from my harsh shocks? ahah

I drive with a lot of heavy cargo, the only thing I notice is my mpg's go down. Empty or full, I still have excellent traction. Take a look at your tires m&s ratings and tread remaining.

I wouldn't do it - these things already weigh something like 6,000 lbs and the traction is extremely good for this size of vehicle. I drive mine in heavy snow, ice and everything in between w/o any issues. I would actually think more dead weight in the rear might upset the balance because these vehicles rotate very neutral and are very predictable in the slippery stuff. Just make sure you have good tires - that's the single most important thing you can do. Happy motoring!

My H2 weighs 7,140 pounds. I don’t think it needs anymore lbs. I think big studded tires would be cool, especially during the summer.
