2005 Hummer h2 transmission fluid replacement ?

What is the transmission fluid type for 05H2, is it the Dexron 3 or 6? Also, in addition to replacing the Filter and Gasket, is there anything else I should be changing/checking? I’m pretty sure I’ve done over 40k miles since a newer but used transmission was installed; is that too many miles before fluid replacement? Thanks.

Buy a Dorman pan with drain plug for yearly fluid changes. Cheap insurance.

I would just use the plug for draining before pulling the pan. Filter should be replaced with fluid every 50k miles at least for normal driving.

Yes, the plug makes it easier to get rid of fluid before unbolting pan. Pan is difficult to twist and remove around the exhaust to begin with. A full pan is a nightmare and mess. The plug is nice for my yearly drains. No filter change then.

Thanks for the info. Pan ordered just need the fluid. Also, can someone tel me the length of the transmission oil dipstick? Mine was missing for some time, ordered a new one but it seems to be too short. Part number would help. Thanks.

To make life less messy, buy a cheap $20 Oil Change Pump from Amazon or eBay, it will suck-out enough oil to prevent spillages when dropping the pan, jacking the front right wheel will help.

Unfortunately my LH exhaust-pipe was in the way by the tiniest fraction probably because the CATs had been replaced and the geometry was slightly different.

I think normally the pan would come out, I say this because one of the "difficult to access" bolts directly above the exhaust pipe had been "chewed" indicating someone had changed the oil & filter previously.

Max fluid that can be drained is approx 5Q total capacity is 11Q
