Question Transfer case noise when shifting...

I noticed today that when I shifted the T-case to Low (first placed transmission in Neutral), there was a great deal of grinding noise going on, as if it was not synchronizing. What causes this? The manual states that when this happens, turn off the engine; the torque converter will stop rotating, then the shift can be made. This seems like a real hassle! Should I even be messing with shifting the transfer case, given that the H1 is full-time 4x4? Any ideas???

Default Transfer case

When was the last time you service the transfer case? And it sounds like a bearing could be the cause.need to be look at

Thumbs up Transfer case noise when shifting...

Ninja...
I'm presently getting the T-case serviced, along with several other maintenance items. I didn't think to even ask about that issue with my tech; I was pretty much distracted by a blown rear hub, and getting things up to date on overall service and reliability. I will check on it, though. Thanks for the heads up!

djadds, I am assuming that you had the transmission in neutral when you shifted the T-Case? It is fairly normal that there is some noise from the Tcase when shifting, particularly when going into and out of 4LO. Make sure that when you shift into 4LO that you make a positive/strong shift into the gear. Yes, there are reasons and situations where you will want to use 4LO or 4HI. Do not use 4LO on the street.
Matt is still in China but is ready to hit the dirt once he gets back. He will be happy to help you with any questions/help you need.

3hummers,
I use the standard protocol when shifting the transfer case, but the noise doesn't sound right. If I ease it into the low gear, it just seems to grind till I push it hard. If I push it fast into gear, it still sounds pretty rough. I'm a little concerned about it.
I'm looking forward to getting together with Matt and hitting the trail!

I would have to hear the noise but they are pretty noisy going into 4LO. Have you checked the transfer case fluid level?

Right now, I'm having all of the H1 serviced-including anything that has gears. I should have a much better status update in that next few days. Everything should be current. I'd like to get this H1 out on the trail!
He knows the north end of I35W pretty well by now...
