3 times in the last month I've had an issue with start up. After running my Humvee for 20 minutes or so and then trying to start it again an houror so later, I turn the key on and the wait light doesn't come on. I wait a few seconds, try to start it and it turns over but doesn't start. I wait between an hour andovernight and it'll start again. It's never done it when the truck's been sitting for several days, starting right up without issue. I looked at the protective control box...it looks pretty new. Anyone had this issue? (1986 M998)

 

its likely the glow plug controller in the water jacket.... they are notorious to failing.....

also, do you have a later version of the PCB? There are several "newer" versions of PCBs that get that GPC out of the circuit and cycle the glow plugs all the time regardless of engine temp, which is "ok"

 

I have a KDS yellow label box...been told to get the green KDS...waddya think?, I'm new to the diesel business.

I have the same issue....................it is not the glow plug controller and glow plugs...........................i changed my fuel injection pump, injectors, lines, brand new batteries, brand new starter, new glow plug controller, new glow plugs. this is a 1993, so I dont think this comes with a KDS box or protective control box. I know for sure it does not have a PMD as this only starts on the 1994 and on. A lot of people will just lead you to the wrong things like they been doing in my case.

Vehicle starts perfect when cold, but when hot the vehicle will crank and not start. next morning, it will start just fine again. my next bet would be the oil pump.
