Hummer H1The original Hummer, which brought the Hummer look to the public eye during Desert Storm, with the addition of some features that make the H1 more of a street vehicle and less of a Army truck
I'm interested in purchasing a 1989 M998. I've looked the vehicle over and all seems to be in good order except for the rear wheels. Both rear wheels are slanted outwards from the top. In fact, the slant looks almost normal because the amount of outward slant is the same on both wheels.
The dealer who is selling the M998 is definitely not an expert, and he is suggesting that the outward slant is normal. As much as I want to believe him, I need a second opinion. I'm assuming that the ball-joints must be bad and need to be replaced. I also read that shims can be added to correct the camber. Any advice?
Yes, the wheels show excessive positive camber. You looking for more information on whether to buy it or not?
If so, need more information on history, mileage, condition, and PRICE$$$
Where's the other headlight bulb? Btw, the front wheels are cambered too, and the tires look worn/uneven. The pics show little, yet I don't see a reason to walk away. Did you drive it? If drives normal(engine/transmission only), I would start an offer @$26k cad. Make sure you drive it first, check to make sure transmission shifts properly, and don't hear a noise from axles, don't worry about the poor handling, since the tires and alignment are whacked. If engine/trans/axles are good, I would max @ $28k cad. GL
The headlights were replaced with LED bulbs which look pretty decent - the dealer never updated his pictures. I did take it for a long drive and it shifted through all the gears. No unusual noises that I could hear. Your have good eyes - yes, the front wheels are cambered and the dealer agreed to get an alignment when I was looking at the Hummer earlier today. I could understand the cambered front wheels - I just honestly never seen cambered rear wheels which is why I started this post. It's also missing a spare tire and has no jack. The vehicle is being sold 'safetied and inspected' which means that someone is obviously looking in the other direction because this vehicle would not pass an inspection as is. I don't mind though, because he's going to plate it and register it for me. As long as I can legally drive away with insurance I'm happy. I called for a quote had to get insurance through a broker: $620 per year.
Thanks again for the help. If I go through with the deal I'll post.
Thanks for the link to Gov Planet. I'm in Canada and I think by the time that I completed the entire bidding process, registration, import duties, conversion from US dollars to CDN dollars - I'm likely looking at roughly the same price. Also, due to the Covid pandemic I would be unable to pick the vehicle up in person.
Designed to haul some serious armor. I don't see the weight that requires that much camber, I do see the tires wearing uneven. An alignment is definitely needed unless the buyer plans to carry some major payload.
Thanks for the links. I tried researching various terms to determine if the positive camber was normal - but I guess I didn't look hard enough. This is definitely going to be a journey. Hummer is being delivered by the dealer later tonight.
