Default H1 stops working at operating temp-

My husband has a 88 H1 6.5L non turbo. So the H1 starts fine and it doesnt overheat. But once the truck gets to operating temperature it starts not to have throttle response and smokes out the tailpipe.
Sometimes it shuts off when driving. I let it cool down for 15 min and then start it up and have no problems starting it up but then again when it hits operating temp it does the same thing again.
Checked the head gasket and that is good.
Any ideas on what the issue is or has this happened to yours? What advice do you all have?

If it is an 88 model it is a HMMWV not an H1.

My husband is driving it. It shouldnt matter who's driving the H1. We just need to know what the problem is.

It was in the original thread at the top. I will repeat it again.

OK so it is a HMMWV. Not an H1.
Can you give me an idea what the problem is.

What color is the smoke? Usually on the 6.5 diesels you see white smoke and it can be caused by a lot of different things. Faulty injectors, glow plugs, glow plug controller, bad head gasket, cracked head or block, bad fuel, air in the fuel line, incorrect timing, low compression or hopefully not coolant or water getting into the combustion chamber. Since you say that it is a non-turbo motor that means that it isn't the PMD, even though some of the behavior is similar to a failing PMD.
Black smoke generally means you are getting incomplete combustion ( clogged air filter, damaged piston rings? )
Blue smoke could be caused by a bad lift pump( not the same as the injection pump ), wrong grade of oil ( 15-40W ) or maybe even over-filled with oil )

Thanks for getting back to me.
The HMMWV starts and drives perfectly, runs about 10 min, then we get alittle of a less throttle response. As he drives it about another 2-3 min then you put the foot on the gas and it goes nowhere. Then stalls out. Wait 10 min, cools down little, then starts fine then when gets to operating temp. falls on its *** again.
Its not overheating. I know in vehicles they have sensors that change the timing and less enriched fuel air mixture. I am familiar with the 6.5 turbo diesel. I have 2 of those in my trucks. Its just weird starts up and goes fine til it gets warm. The engine only has 5,000 miles on it.
Thanks
