GMC Announces the Hummer
With exception for the Corvette, GM builds a platform first, then they decide what logos they will slap on it and brand it under. This GMC/Hummer is no different. It was not purpose built to be a Hummer. They already had an EV platform they wanted to bring to market (this platform will be used for other vehicles as well i.e. the Cadillac) and some marketing genius identified the Hummer moniker for its launch. This is why it's so confusing to Hummer owners and why non-Hummer owners are all over it. In reality, the H2 is no different. However, at least in the early days of Hummer, AM General had a say in its design before they would give the rights to GM to put the Hummer name on it. This is why our H2s are 'based' on the 3/4 ton suburban chassis, but still quite different.
Loosely based on that chassis but not fully and not compatible. The H2 "platform" is unique to the H2 and is not fully shared with any other GM vehicle. The frame is specific to the H2 only. Many of the things bolted to the frame are shared though like much of the HD front suspension, 1500 rear (sort of), but even the transfer case, rear axle are H2 specific as are a good amount of electrical like the driver door module (you can use one from a GM SUV but the global windows buttons will no longer work), along with some other minor things like that. The H2 is pretty unique in that respect though and generally speaking you are correct in that most vehicles are just a platform with different cosmetics and badges.
I am hoping someone not in the snow belt with an 08-10 SUT is itching to buy one of these new electrics might want to sell off the old one. I would like to replace my 06 with something with the new L92 and 6L80. These also make better suited for the Duramax swap.
