You been told wrong. H3s with proper tires can go anywhere.

H3 3.5L: avoid this one due to engine issues (first model year)
H3 3.7L: 239hp/241ft-lb mated to a 4 speed. (higher gearing)
H3 alphas (5.3L) have a lot of power(option in 2008-2010): 300hp/320ft-lb mated to a 4 speed. (lower gearing)
H2 2003-2004 6.0L: 316hp/360ft-lb mated to a 4 speed.
H2 2005-2007 6.0L: 325hp/365ft-lb mated to a 4 speed.
H2 2008-2009 6.2L: 393hp/415ft-lb mated to a 6 speed.
The top end in power/speed is going to be either the H3 alphas or the H2 08/09.
Arguably, if you want the older H2 interior (many do), the significantly lower price would allow you to drop in a supercharger & more than close the power gap.
As Doc Olds said, these will go anywhere with the right tires.
