Default type of oil

my hummer is imported fromt eh states to the UAE ( local ambient temp can reach 55 celicus in summers)
and i think they replaced the original hummer oil with the local synthetic oils here

they are rated at 20w50 here

will this mess up my engine? what oils work best with hummers?

I am inyour neck of the woods too, personallyI run with Mobil 1 synthetic (0w 40) or alternately try Castrol Edge synthetic (10w 60) both will cover the extremes of the ambient temperatures experienced throughout the year in the UAE.

I do not however reccommend the "local" 20w 50 ****, more harm than good in my opinion.

I agree, the 10w-60 would begood for all year since it does get cold enough in the winter thereto worry about the early morning starting...

I don't remember what we used in our trucks when I was "vacationing" in al dhafra....

I'd go Amsoil in the Zero weight due to the temp changes, I would worry more about cooling and condition of your hoses. Add Water Wetter, or Purple ICE, and tranny temps unless you have a stick.

Holy **** that sucks, I could never stand that much heat....I never knew a car could withstand that much heat without breaking something in the engine

i already dumped 20w50 in it

ill change it to the 0w40 next time
thanks for the advice

BTW for the people that dont know this region well , it can get 55 celcius + 100% humidity
its like living in a broiler room in peak summers

You get used to the heat after a while... I remember grabbing metal stands without gloves and blistering my hand.... or sitting down on an aircraft stand and grilling the waffle pattern into my legs.... and at night you'll walk around with a coat on because it's so damn cold...

A 20w-50 will not harm your engine... unless there is something bad about the quality... as the other fella stated.

The old misnoma about engine weight for heat and cold is technically disappearing. Todays newer engines have much tighter tolerances that's why you have these newer weights like 5w20, 5w30, 0w30, 0w40. You don't really have to change your oil weight like you used too. 20w50 is pretty heavy, 20 weight at room temp and 50 weight at it max temp. Only in colder climates you need to worry more about oil, but then there are block heaters. Your engine consistantly runs around 210/220 degrees even in 130 degree weather, so why do you think you need to change your oil weight? Your cooling system maintains a constant temp. Its not a lawnmower. If you look in your glovebox ownwers manual there should be a chart to show what weight oil you should use for particular climate temps. You could go by that chart. I would go with a known good synthetic at either the manual recommendations or the current weight and be more concerned with your coolant, cooling system hoses and transmission fluid/cooling because your tranny uses oil to cool it not water like your engine. Also how old is your battery because heat suks the life out of them too.

I almost forgot, if you can't find familiar named oils go with SHELL oil after all its owned by the Saudies.
