my first thought,(often wrong), is alternator but that is usually in the audio, not external.
i am reminded though in cold start, i "sometime", not always hear the fan roar!
last night,42 degrees and not a sound on first start?? so whats with the fan.

btw you might monitor the volts at start,15v, and see if the whine stops when volts drop to 13-14.
