Well I never actually set out to buy a Hummer. You see, I had a bright yellow 2000 Nissan Xterra that I'd put 191,000 miles on. I had used it to cover a lot of on & off road driving, pulled bundles of cut saplings, hauled rocks, etc. I really liked my X but it was starting to get tired. So in Oct '07 I went shopping for another yellow Xterra - did I mention that I really liked that truck and the new ones seemed improved over my 2000. Nissan was offering good incentives on 2007's, so I told several dealers "Find me a 2007 yellow Xterra in the Offroad trim & I'll buy it". Only the Offroad trim includes skid plates, rear locker, etc. Turns out there were none to be found on the east coast. It seems all those Xterra advernture ads are just marketing - they really get used as min-vans for those in denial. I even went to one dealership to test drive a 4x4 Xterra, but the sales weasel wasn't interested in talking to me if I wasn't interested in the trucks they had on the lot - it'll be a cold day in Hell before they see me back on that lot. So we drove to another Nissan dealership - lots of Xterra's but not a single 4x4 - BOGUS.
On the way home we passed the Hummer dealer & decided to stop in just as a lark. We'd heard the H3- I5 was massively underpowered, but on a test drive were impressed that it was certainly peppier than our Xterra (not a real high bar, I know). The sales guy at the Hummer dealership was super. No pressure, no sales BS. Just gave us information and showed us the truck.
We went home and talked about it. The H3 certainly had the offroad capability that we have to have (second home is 2.5 miles along logging road). It rode nice on the highway, but all the Adv models in the dealership had bling we didn't want to pay for. Two days later the sales guy calls in that he has an H3 coming in equipped just the way we wanted it. Done deal.
