What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

OK, I do not own an H3 but my wife is really wanting a Red one. So what is it about your H3 that you really like and what are some of the things to watch out for.I have read some things about problems with the head. I know we will be purchasing one within the next few weeks and your comments and advice will be appreciated.

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

Welcome to our forum first off!

- Secondly, I will say for me, it is one of the only SUV's I have driven that handles like a car but has the durability of a tank.

-The head and valve issue does not affect the newer models since they have a different, larger engine.

-The road noise is very minimul.

-The stock sound system, even the basic standard one I have, sounds awsome.

-If you have Verizon as your cell provider, you can link your H3 On-Star cell phone to your Verizon account as an extra line for $9.99 a month, and pool your minutes from your Verizon plan.

-You can pretty much run over any pothole, bump, rock, dead corpse, etc, and not worry about doing any damage. I have 27K miles on mine, and my alignment to this day is perfect. Even the dealer said it was fine after I told them to check it.

-The 2007 models come with the larger 3.7L engine, which is definitely faster then the 3.5L previously installed on the 2006 models.

-You have an unlimited knowledge databse right here you can tap into anytime.

-They are like, really cool, like so cool, like yeah cool.

i have had a 06 andnow havea 07... loved them both
the 07 has more powerforsure....
the onlydislike ican think of right now is the seat adjustments on the leather power seats ,its very tight between the seat and door and hard to shove ur hand/arm down to the adjustment switches
the wife just said she has no problem gettin her hand down to it.... smaller hands i reckon

otherthan that i cant thinkofanything else i didnt like

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

My wife got one and she thinks it’s the cats meow... I've been on an anti-GM kick after having a lot of problems with my current truck and her last two GM vehicles but it’s made me a believer.

The good: Seems burly, drives nice, decent gas mileage for an all time all wheel drive SUV, fit and finish seem real well, free OnStar for a year is cool. It has some REALLY COOL options available, like electronic locking rear diff for example. Looks great, really good crash test results, stabilitrac comes standard (important if you have kids). Comfy seats and nice interior. Not that you would probably do it but I guess they can accommodate 35" tires with some tweaks to the torsion bars and 37" it you do a 3" lift. Capable off roader. Cool driving schools and hummer owner events.

The bad: It's a rolling blind spot, cars are easy to lose if their in the rear passenger side corner. Using your mirrors is a must more in this car then any other I've driven. The trans tunnel is really wide and for me as the passenger it’s uncomfortable for long trips, my wives thinner legs are not affected. It's an SUV and rides like one (not that I care since it’s 10 times better the my 2500HD). People say it’s gutless but if you want to go fast buy a sports car. The steering wheel could tilt a little higher.

Overall, if I didn't need a truck bed to haul my motocross and mountain bikes around I wouldbuy one of these is a split second.

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

There are a few problem areas that will need to be addressed by GM.

The front and rear diffs are not the strongest..seems the pinion gear fails either due to soft materials or mis-alighnment...not common but does happen.

If you wait till middle of 07 there will be changes made to the interior that include relocation of the door switches (PITA where they are now) and a few other minor interior adjustments.

Don't know if all 07's have them or not but I know the mid 07's will also have child safety door locks (if that is important to you)

Honestly, if I didn't go off-road I would never buy another one or recommend one to a pavement pounder...for the money you can get alot nicer with more power and luxery....but if you want something that will take you anywhere you want to go on or off road then the h3 is a smart choice.

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

Dislikes:

- The power window buttons are placed too far back.
- I would have preferred a fold down tailgate instead of the door.
- A telescoping wheel would also have been nice. When I'mforward enough to comfortably reachthe wheel, the pedals are a bit close.
- The near vertical windshield is susceptibleto stone damage.
- Paint has a lot of orange peel
- Milage isn't great

A lot more positives than negatives, though. Just a few...

- Rides well
- Handles well
- Feels refined
-Decent quality materials/fabrics
- Finished well
- The big sunroof is cool.
- The Hummer looks (not a cookie cutter SUV)

There's a lot to like.

I knew what I was getting when I bought it..so I have NO complaints!

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

First off let me say I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mine! What wz said about the blind spot!! OK, so install a back up camera or sensor or use the LawWyfe sensor and just really survey your surroundings wellbefore u get into it and back out, use ALL those mirrors and since "I am an excellent driver"I turn my head aroundand look as an extra measure when changing lanes. MAYBE a little more power, but mine has plenty (I often have to rein her in because I findmyself going too fast) and I figure a lack of a V8 or higher keeps me from getting tickets!

My biggest pet peeves...no light in the glove box and no light on the mirrors..(OK so I am a girly girl!) I already own a luxury car, so I know what it is like to have all the extras...I can say I dont miss them on the H3 which I might add I do drive daily as my primary ride. I bought it because I wanted a rugged (and cool and unigue) vehicle.
All in all, I'd sayDUUUUU ITTTTTTTTTTTTT![sm=gears.gif]

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

I don't like the dome light being off when I go out to unload groceries for my wife, out of the cargo area.

Does it not have a switch? Granted it's my wifes ride, so I don't deal with it day in and day out. But we live out in the sticks, and at night it's DARK out here. I would expect to havea cargo light when the rear door is opened, but I get nothing. So, I end up having to open a side door so the light will come on. [&:]

FM..you have a problem then..

Because my dome lights both come on when I open just the rear cargo door...You might want to check to see if the little button to the lower left of the headlight switch is pressed ON!

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

Hummer service and warranty is very good so don't worry about repairs, you'll be covered and most dealers will give you a free loaner car. If you buy from an exclusive dealer, expect the same or better pampering and service as you would expect from any luxury brand.

When you buy, make sure to get at least the luxury package, Monsoon sound system, Sunroof, trailer hitch, roof racks, and GM step bars (if your wife is short or you have kids). The adventure package is not needed unless you really want to do a lot ofhard-core off-roading. You can also at least upgrade to larger tires later when you need to replace. XM is a nice-to-have and OnStar with America's Choice calling on your family plan is the safest way to go and will also add a certain wow-factor when your wife is cruising with her friends.

Biggest down sideis a blind spot thatis slightly worse thanmany SUV's with tinted glasswhen backing up but turning radius is extremelytight so it's a wash when it comes to parking lots.

Overall, it's a great truck. Good luck with your purchase and hopefully your wife will give you the keys every now and then!

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

I really like the ability to not be stopped by the snow even when not on 4lock.
The solid feel around the passengers is comforting, and the crask test results are tops.
Turning radius is awesome.
The rear seats have fairly good knee room even with front seats all the way back.
The storage compartments are effective and accessable.
pulls cars out of snow drifts--even cop cars (x2)--hope it will help down the road..!!??

dislikes.....
The rear wiper needs to have more wipe distance.
Needs lowering suspension system for the driver to allow use of drive up ATM's. HA_HA

I previously owned a 92 Bronco with a 351 Windsor which died at 257000miles. The H3 is tops except
for the power. 5-6 mpg difference is a plus also.

Needless to say, + + + + on the purchase and not disappointed at all!!

Switch is on, the lights work when the doors are opened... just not when the cargo door is opened. I don't even see a switch/actuator for the cargo door. So I either have a problem, or they jipped me. For instance, if I get out of the drivers door and close it, and open the cargo door.. the light will actually go off after just a bit as if it's only acting on the closing of the drivers door. It doesn't recongnize the cargo door at all. [&:][:@]

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

fireman, try to have the truck running and all doors closed, open the rear hatch door and see if you get an open door message on the display. Maybe your door switch is stuck in. That could be why you aren't getting it to turn on the light when you open the door. If there is no open door message then you know the switch is faulty. My lights come on when I open the rear door.

Fireman 01-12-2007 02:56 AM

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

I'll certainly have to check into it. Right now, it acts as though there is no switch at all. I have not paid attention to see if the door message comes up, but I'll check on that.

Fireman 01-12-2007 03:07 AM

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

OK, I armed myself with a flashlight and quickly found the switch. (all the other times I thinkabout it, it's dark and I can't see ;)) The switch is shorting out. If I push it in, it doesn't work, but if I push it to the right a bit the lights come on, but fade back out if I don't hold it there. Guess I'll have an excuse to chat with the pretty girls at the service center... :)

Thanks for shedding some light on this... [8D]

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

I have had my H3 for about 2 months and so far I love it. It isa solid truck and drives very nice. I was driving a 03 Slverado SS and thought the power difference was going to be hard to get used to but wasn't. I like the Cool, factor,XM Radio,Heater Controls are easy to adjust and confortable to drive. Like others said the window controls could be in a better spot although I very rarley put one down.

I work in the service department of a Cadillac/Hummer dealership as shop forman and would not have bought this if it were a dud. These trucks are really taking off and will only get stronger in the near future with new models. Steve

Things I hate:

[ul][*]Leaving it parked at work in down town Buffalo...not a good neighborhood.[/ul]

Thigs I did not like but got usedto very quickly:

[ul][*]The gas and brake pedals are too close together (I have size 13 feet)[*]The widow controls are back too far[*]Not much room to adjust the seat with the door closed (I have big hands)[/ul]
I love everything else especially the Monsoon with a little Def leppard or (old) V-H cranking out of it.;)

Got the switch fixed today. Only 35 minutes at the dealership... not nearly enough time to enjoy the lovely company of the attractive young ladies who work there. ;)

But I have to admitt, I love thefaces my wife makes at me when I'm doing it.. :D

ImportKiller,

When are the changes in the 2007 coming exactly? Does the '07 not have child locks on it now?

Thanks.

importkiller 01-14-2007 03:18 AM

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

Don't know if all the 07's have the child safety door locks or not, from what I have read and heard they do not. Rumors out of GM say the changes will be made in a mid 07 release, kind of like a 2007 1/2, gm likes doing half years for some damn reason.

JM 01-14-2007 05:25 AM

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

-4 speed gearbox.
-position of windows control
-position of seats control.
-non removable headrests in the back
-non heated rear view mirrors.
-no air conditionning vents in the back.

My guess is that point 2 to 5 will be adressed in future models.

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

Things I dislike: My abilities at backing up the beast. This weekend I squashed the front of a BMW 320 while backing it up. I didn't hear or feel a thing. I only have 1100 miles on it (and maybe backed it up less than 10 times), so I am still getting use to it. I am currently online looking for backup sensors, and I had a camera on order but it just haven't arrived yet.

HUMMERmole 01-14-2007 10:54 AM

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

LIKES:
Exterior/Interior styling.
The way it drives (like driving a 4 wheel BMX bicycle)
The way it handles in ice and snow.
Comfort (comfortable seats, huge sunroof, decent stereo, quiet ride)

DISLIKES:
Visibility out of the rear window and limited travel of the rear wiper.
Gas mileage (although not terrible for what it is)
Monthly payment$
WEEKLY TRIPS TO THE DEALER TO FIX VARIOUS ERROR CODES.

rverginia 01-14-2007 07:42 PM

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

Likes Everything!, except:

No visibility - fixed it with a backup camera and sensors.
Rear window wipe - only gets half the window that you can't see out of anyway.
Pedals too close together - really is dangerous for fat foots like me.
Window switches too far back - I hear a fix is coming - too bad for me.
No heated side mirrors - OK, it's not an escalade, but it still is the price point where it should have them.
No heated windsheild washers - they froze in the cold weather this week.
Power Seat controls too hard to reach - put them on the door?
NoiPod or Aux jack - 21st century requirement.
No Bluetooth - OnStar- puleeze...
Meep Meep Road Runner Horn - Really should sound like the truck that it is.
no interior lights where you want them (glove boxes, vanity mirrors, engine)

I really do like it - I just think these should be fixed or included in a $40,000 vehicle.

H3 and what do not like?

I have not read all of the other posts so hope this is not redundant.
Things I like:
1.The H3 fits nicely in my garage
2. It has a nice turning radius and is easy to drive.
3. Good (relatively) mpg.
4. Looks great on the road
5. Comfortableseats

The negatives:
1. Had to pay extra for locking gas cap
2. Also additional other items that should have been included

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

Overall, I am really happy with my H3. I knew exactly what I was getting before purchasing so there were no surprises. I knew it isa bit underpowered but it's rarely a problem or even noticeable in my daily use. I also knew about the poor visibility through the small windows-also not a problem as I just take extra caution when backing up.BUT I can say that it is the shiz in the snow. I live outside of Denver and my H3has been througha lot so far this winter.I never have to worry about getting somewhere when the roads are not plowed. Couldn't love my truck more!

Daddio 01-23-2007 02:45 AM

RE: What to like abouot your H3 and what do not like?

I recently purchased a red 2007 H3 with the adventure package, step bars, brush guard, and off-road lights (both grille and light bar). Here's my impression thus far:

Likes:
- Very comfortable ride for such an off-road capable SUV (my opin, most SUVs on the market arenot reallyoff-road capable)
- Corners extremely well, especially for such a high vehicle
- Interior is nice, not luxurious, but that's not what I was purchasing. The "U" is for Utility. Interior is nicer then the new Toyo 4 Runner.
- Sunroof is awesome (however, mine is not working right now)
- Sound system is very nice.
- The look of this vehicle stands out above all the other plain wrapper SUVs out on the market!!!
- Very solid feel to it. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to take it off road yet, but will soon, can't wait!
- GM/Hummer Service Center has excellent customer service (here in Jax, FL anyway)

Dislikes:
- Gas mileage. GM markets this vehicle to get 15 city/19 highway, I'm barelygetting 15 and all my driving is highway (and I don't accelerate quickly either).
- Quality issues: the fan clutch has been replaced, a fog lamp was fixed (almost fell out),and it's going in tomorrow to have a sunroof module replaced, and I've only had the vehicle for 1 month! Also found what appears to be a welding "slag" on the roof that was painted over that they will be taking to the body shop to remove.
- Lack of side mirror defoggers. I have to say I am suprised that GM hasn't made this a standard by now. My 10 yr old Nissan Pathfinder SE (not the luxury model) came with side mirror defoggers. Rear window defogger takes a long time.
- Fixed rear window. I know why it's fixed, but I miss the pop-up rear window I had on my 10 yr old pathfinder.
- Lack of storage areas in the front cabin area. The side storage areas are useless except for a map or magazine.

Overall, I'm very happy with my new H3, just wish I wasn't making so many trips to the dealership due to quality issues. My hope is that once these last items are corrected, the only time they'll see me is for service. It's nice though that the folks at my local dealership are extremely helpful. Also,I do wish it got the gas mileage that's stated. 15 is not extremely bad, just was expecting better.

In my opinion, if you're looking for an SUV that stands out from the rest and is capable of doing some off roading, then you should seriously consider the H3. If you're looking for a "soccer mom" type SUV withmore luxury and bettergas mileage(and there's nothing wrong with that), there are better options out there.

Good luck on your purchase!
