BTW.... I had 5.13's with 35's in my ranger.... tire size has nothing to do with anything....

the gear ratio is built upon desired engine rpm with compromises based on driveability.

4.10 are not the stock gear! 4.56 is factory gearing on on my 04. I've seen 4.56 on an 03 and 05 also. GM may of changed it w/ the new motors...wanting a different power range.

If you wanted to keep the same powerband going from stock to 38s- You would need a gear around 5.25. There are 5.13s which will give just a little bit more high end and 5.38's would give you more low end than stock.

The rear end takes 9.5" 14 Bolt Semi Float gear, Front takes 9.25" IFS gear. Expect to pay $250-300/each for good quality gear. Plus you need a master install kit for each gear, another $175 or so. If you want to extend the life of these new gears, get a good differential cover w/ extra capacity, a fill and drain plug and cooling fins. Another $200 or so. Synthetic Fluid...maybe $30-40.

Finding someone that wont bend you over backwards installing the gears is the real pain in the ***! Average total cost for font and rear (parts & labor) run $1300-1800.

Alot of different gear brands and manufacturered from the same place...some just are not a refined as others.

Guess whos getting new gears in their truck next week also?

You are pretty close on the cost of gear labor.... Mine cost $1000 because I didn't want to do it myself.... and now that the rear pinion seal leaks because they didn't change it while they were trying to figure out the pinion torque, and BOTH front axle seals are leaking, I have another place that offered to do the repairs for $300 an axle.... but I'm also buying 5.13's or 5.38s from them....

One of the other things you might want to look into w/ whoever your looking at installing the gears is if you are providing the gears, they most likely will not offer any type of warranty- You make it 10 miles down the road and your differential sounds like rocks, your SOL. You dont know if the guy installing them didnt set them right, and the shop doesn't know if you just bought some cheap *** POS gears. I think that is a fair policy...

I've been wanting to do this since I put on my lift, and could not justify the cost. I've been asking people for 2 years who has experience, knows what their doing and is confident doing this on the same model diffs. Finally found a friend of a friend that does rearends on rockcrawlers and drag cars for a living. Doing my install for $100/diff. I'm going to throw him an extra $100 just because its honestly worth it.

I have a SUT so maybe they are different then the wagons. I don't know, this is what i found on my SUT

Thats odd... everything I searched on is showing 4.10 also. My service manuals are out at the shop wonder what the hell they list.

I pulled the cover on wednesday and actually counted the teeth which came out to 4.56. Has anyone else physically counted their gears?

Well if you do have 4.10s in it, going from stock to 38" - 4.72 would maintain the same ratio, but now your spinning a larger tire/more weight. 4.88s would come out pretty close. 4.56 would be a waste.

just turned interesting again 4.56s imo would be a great trail gear in an h2 with a 6.0 in it with stock gears.

4.10s just dont seem like a trail gear at all for an suv of this off road capability, suv or not lol probably wouldnt be bad with a 6.2 but still just not enough gear for that low end trail crawling, great for the highways though lol

just my .02 though lol

well when ever i decide to do it, more then likely i'll be doing 4.88
