Default transmission rpm question

Not being used to the automatic five cylinder I feel like I may be asking a dumb question. When going about forty and maybe up hill I push on the accelerator and the rpms jump to 3200 like it goes into overdrive. In an old v8 I would be thinking there was some slippage because I cant tell that great a response although it does indeed go faster. This might just be a characteristic of this engine I hope. Does a four-speed auto just have to work harder with its five cyl. to push this truck? Any one else have this sensation?

When you are in drive and crusing the transmission is in o.d. when you accelerate you are taking it out of O.D. and into 3rd gear which changes the rpms. If you left it in 3rd gear you wouldn't notice this much. hope that helps.

Sounds pretty normal doctnj, it does weigh 5850 lbs. Nothing wrong with it, just alot of weight to push down the highway with a 5 cyl

At somewhere just above 45mph, the 3's auto trans torque converter will fully lock up (not a true overdrive/but close) and the RPMs will drop. Say you are cruising (cruise control on) along at 50 mph, with complete lock up your rpms will be at or just under 2k depending on your tire size. When you start up and incline, the I5 will apply throttle, if the incline is too much to maintain lock up it will unlock, and the RPMs will jump up 600-800+, sounds like a down shift. Get over the hill, and the converter will lock up again. If you yourself get in the throttle while cruisin, you may unlock the converter into D and then actually down shift into 3rd, and the RPMs will really jump. That is not slippage, just the nature of the 4L60-E 4 speed trans.

This truck is heavy, so the trans does a lot more in and out of lock up than with the TQ of the Alpha V8.

If rhill's trucks weighs 5850 (typo there brud?), instead of my 4700, or the stock Alpha's 4850. I know I'm gonna vote pink!!!

2008 Hydra-Matic 4L60 / 4L65 / 4L70 (M30/M32/MD6/M70) Car and Truck Transmissions [/b]
Hydra-Matic 4L60 / 4L65 / 4L70 four-speed automatic rear- and four-wheel-drive transmission
2008 Model Year

SUMMARY OF NEW OR CHANGED FEATURES FOR MODEL YEAR 2008[/b]

· New Applications: New 4WD application added for the Hummer H3 Alpha with the 5.3L V8 (LH8) engine.
· Quality Improvement with Bonded Spacer Plate Assembly Incorporating Solenoid Screens
· New Aluminum Cooler Fittings Replace Steel Fittings
· Input Speed Sensor Completion of Rollout into all Applications

FULL DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW OR CHANGED FEATURES[/b]

NEW APPLICATIONS[/b]: New 4WD Application added for the HUMMER H3 Alpha with the 5.3L V8 (LH8) engine.
The Hummer H3 Alpha application with the Vortec 5.3L V8 (LH8) engine use the Hydra-Matic 4L60 (M30). This application requires a new torque converter housing design and 300mm torque converter.

QUALITY IMPROVEMENT WITH BONDED SPACER PLATE ASSEMBLY INCORPORATING SOLENOID SCREENS[/b]
All applications of the 4L60 / 4L65 / 4L70 get a new bonded spacer plate assembly incorporating screens for (3) solenoids, and the bonding of the valve body gaskets to the spacer plate. This one-piece design improves assembly and improves quality.

NEW ALUMINUM COOLER FITTINGS REPLACE STEEL FITTINGS[/b]
All applications of the 4L60 / 4L65 / 4L70 will incorporate aluminum cooler fittings in the transmission case in place of steel fittings. This product improvement will help prevent corrosion of the fitting and also uses a new external seal to improve quality and durability.

INPUT SPEED SENSOR COMPLETION OF ROLLOUT INTO ALL APPLICATIONS[/b]
With the 2008MY, all 4L60 / 4L65 / 4L70 applications have an input speed sensor. This technology was introduced in this product starting in the 2006MY with a three year rollout plan. To allow more sophisticated electronic programming of shifting and other transmission functions, an internal input speed sensor precisely monitors the input shaft speed. To fit the sensor inside the transmission without changing major components, the sensor is installed inside the fluid pump. The turbine shaft incorporates a spline, so that the sensor can count the teeth to determine the input speed.
[/b]
LOW MAINTENANCE[/b]
For severe use, DEXRON®-VI fluid changes are the only maintenance recommended. For normal use there is no fluid change scheduled. Continual development of the 4L60 / 4L65/4L70 to increase high-mileage longevity remains a priority.

Another contribution to low maintenance is the ability to match the transmissions to each of its broad list of applications. Performance efficiency and ideal cooling are achieved by using one of four sizes of torque converters and that contributes to long-term durability.

OVERVIEW[/b]
[size=2]The Hydra-Matic 4L60 / 4L65 are differentiated primarily because of gearset design. Each of the two planetary gearsets in these four-speed automatic transmissions have four pinion gears in the 4L60, and five pinion gears in the
