transmission fluid change with some pics

My H3 has 64,450 miles on it and this is the first transmission fluid/filter change. It looked like brown oil. What a huge difference in driving down the road and the rpm's dropping at lower speeds. I didn't take too many pictures, just thought maybe you all would like to see what it looks like with the pan off.

I bought the gasket and filter and fluid from the dealership, because I noticed that OEM seals are thicker. The one from my truck wasn't even that worn I'm sure I could have re-used it. The filter wasn't looking to healthy.

Did you use Dexron-VI? I just bought an H3 with 100,000 miles and I don't think the previous owner touched anything so I have to do a full 100,000 mile service and trying to find the best things to use!

Done a search and this is the best that came up.

What transmission fluids are people using??

How much do I need?

How hard is it to change the trans filter and fluid, has anyone done it???

I really want to do mine soon.

How often do you change it?? Owners manual just says as required, mine has never been done, just 50000km now

Want to change it at 600000km, not sure if it is needed, as I heard people go longer. But really might be worth doing anyway as a preventative measure, has to be cheaper than a transmission rebuild of a trans that has been damaged by old fluid.

That oil doesn't look too terrible to me, the pics show it being red.

What about the fluid in the lines ? Did flow back or is the old fluid still in them ?

happythree 06-19-2013 01:05 PM

dumb question for a tranny man

first, changing tran juice is something I have never done.

?,,,what could it hurt to run the engine about 30 seconds with the pan off to dump more fluid??
im guess in they have run with complete loss of juice before

id le to do mine and don't like doing just part of it!.

Run it without the pan? No. Drop the pan, reinstall, remove the left? line going into the radiator and pump/drain into a bucket and Run/refill it until clear? Yes.

Never run anything like the engine or trans without fluid. Change fluids at the recommended interval to prevent excessive wear on parts and early failure.
