Default Transmission Cable not engaging? Slack in Cable?

On tuesday, I purchased a 2006 H2 with only 35k Miles from Cutler Bay Mercedes. Drove it back to tampa with no issues. Its been driving fine for a few days.

I make a quick stop at the mall last night and the shifter is just moving freely. I got on here and on google and people said to check for the plastic clip underneath.

Mine is still connected to the transmission. And with some help the lever will move the H2 into gear. I got under the truck and was able to put it in drive and get it home.

If the cable is still attached at the transmission and is attached up above. Is it possible the cable is just frayed or is there too much slack in the cable? Thanks for your help.
