Split rims snapping bolts
Hi, sorry to all I am no expert on Hummers but my business partner is stuck in Africa (Tanzania) driving with his family in a H1 from Uganda to Cape Town. He keeps blowing bolts that hold the rims together, is this a known problem? Is there something he is doing wrong, he understands mechanics so clockwise tightening etc is being done.
Can anyone explain the logic for split rims? Maybe he can change to fixed rims? Any help much appreciated he has blown fifteen bolts getting to Tanzania, am sure you guys will have some great knowledge I can pass on to him. Kind regards, Shaun Hunter. |
Once you snap one bolt you are supposed to replace that one and also the one on either side of it as they are put under extreme stress. If he only replaced one at a time this could turn into a cycle.

Thanks, I will pass this info on

Wonder how many times the wheels have been part? AMG recommends using new bolts each time. Also the bolts are to be torques to a specific torque. Over-torquing can weaken them considerably.

Hi thanks, he is using Good Year Wrangler MT 37 / 12.5 R16.5 military spec tyres.

Does anyone know the torque settings to set to when putting the tires together, and if no torque wrench available what size wrench and degrees to turn?
|
I believe that you tighten to 50 the first time through and 70 the second time.
