Default Spare tire carrier latch broke :(

The metal part that locks it into place snapped off and my spare tire swung out to the side while i was on the freeway. Pretty scary experience.

Anyone know where i can get a new latch assembly? i have no idea why it broke, but it snapped in half. I have some rope holding the carrier closed for now, but i need a more permanent fix.

Any help?

Do you have the older style or newer gen carrier? The new one has a safety pin that should be a lot safer.

I am experiencing the same problem, thankfully mine has the safety cable, but still needs to be fixed.
Any suggestions??

Did you get anyone’s answer to this? Although we have a pin- the cable is worn and won’t be enough...

The fix for me was to use a bunch of liquid wrench silicone spray and it works fine now.

Thanks! I tried the liquid wrench but it didn’t work for me. Our late is there-but isn’t working at all. We have the cable/pin but I don’t feel it is enough to take a road trip with. ANyone know where we can get a new latch and replace it ourselves?

I contacted a dealer in my area and the latch is still available, but it is listed at just under $1,000.00

I was also told to loosen all the bolts and place the carrier in the latch in the latched position and then retighten, this is an attempt to re-align the latch, incase the striker is not hitting properly.
just a thought
