Snugtop Slant Back Cover

I just bought an H3T, and would like to purchase a slant back cover made by Snugtop. My local HUMMER dealer wants $3,800 for one, and the closest Snugtop dealer is 400 miles away.

I found a couple of places willing to sell the covers for $2950, but shipping would be between $600-800, which ends up with an all-in price comparable to going to the HUMMER dealer. It's hard to justify spending close to $4,000 for a truck topper.

Here are my questions:

First, has anyone found the slant backs for less than $2,950?

Second, are they hard to install? I assume it would take two or more people to lift the topper onto the truck. Also, the top has an integrated brake light, which must connect to the vehicle's wiring system.

SCOT 04-21-2009 08:18 PM

i'd imagine a caps a cap, it probably clamps down? they look cool but for 4000 what would you use it for? bling factor? if you have a tall garage you could use pulleys to raise it? or grab a buddy, i use to do mine by myself but that was 20 years ago.

JGBB04 04-22-2009 05:53 AM

1 I was told you could only get it thru the dealer, heard the same for the diamondback cover as well.
2 I saw 1 @ the dealer & yes it just clamps on like any other topper & there is a wire harness for the brake light & interior light, didn't see how it was hooked up though

BLACKH3T 04-22-2009 09:59 AM

You can purchase it from a Snugtop dealer it doesn't have to be the dealership. The local snugtop dealer can get them anyway, I was going to get one up til the point they said it would be 2995.00 installed.

SCOT 04-22-2009 04:08 PM

what's the point behind it? does it open up? we need links for such pricey mods? i need to see it? lol

BLACKH3T 04-22-2009 04:18 PM

It does open and can have cargo storage inside. I lm sure everyone has seen these pictures but here is a link to one with the back open.

$2995.00 is a good price for this. Snug top does not offer there dealers much margin, they only make around 10% on this price. I would look to buy one at a local snug top dealer as most will include installation for you at no charge. There are no other manufactures that I know of that makes the same type of product as this right now.

Thanks for the replies

I think I am going to order a slant back topper tomorrow. It's too bad none of the HUMMER dealers within 200 miles will price it anywhere close to MSRP. It will be cheaper for me to pay $600+ in shipping. I will let everyone know how the purchase goes, and try to post some pics of the installation.

BLACKH3T 04-26-2009 06:02 PM

Hope you have the rearview camera. Once you put that lid on you won't be able to see out of the back glass.

Hummer Guy 04-26-2009 09:19 PM

They are super slow to produce them, and right now are on backorder w/ no ETA...some plastic piece from an outside supplier is holding up production. If you can find one already built, go for it. If you have to order it, plan on waiting a few months. Sucks.

Cool product, crappy distribution thus far.

largemouthbass 04-27-2009 02:07 PM

Looked at getting one a few months ago but for the price no way. Also, you loose a lot of square footage for storage because of the slant design. They look cool, but not very practical if you want to use the bed.

H3Rider 04-29-2009 03:45 PM

I ordered one from Mid America near St Louis back in 1st week of Apr. They said it'd be about 3 weeks. And now I hear it'll be another week or so. Mid America claims it was from all the orders they were getting for the thing. :)
Anyway, hopefully it'll be in soon.
Driving there to have it installed. Save the $750 shipping charge.

Slant Back Order and Bed Box

I ordered a topper from Mid America a couple of days ago. The full price will be $2,895 after the $100 discount from Snugtop, but I only had to put down a $1,500 deposit to get the order placed. After reading the post about production delays, I called Snugtop directly and asked how long it's taking to fill orders, and they said they are producing the toppers within a few weeks to a month of receiving orders. However, Snugtop also mentioned that they only ship products to Mid America every few weeks. If a topper in the color you ordered isn't available when a shippment goes out, you will have to wait at least a few weeks before the next shippment.

Shipping from Mid America to Minneapolis would take an additional few weeks, and will cost somewhere between $500-600. Also, Mid America will only ship to a commercial address, since the toppers come on an 18-wheeler. I am 400 miles away from Mid America, so between gas and sales tax, the shipping cost is probably a wash, but I might get the topper a few weeks sooner.

Finally, I am wondering if anyone knows if the OEM full-length lockable bed boxes are compatible with the slant back? The box latches onto the cargo management system rails, and I am concerned that the slant back topper does as well. I could always spend another $2,600 on the H3T TruckVault system just to be safe....

largemouthbass 05-04-2009 12:18 PM

yes they are compatible. Saw one at my dealer that had both installed.

Hey guys, just wanted to pass this along….I just heard Sewell HUMMER has 3 show-room demo H3T Slant Back Toppers for sale. Deeply discounted, show room demos meaning "only installed for the show room, never on a customer's truck".They are supposed to have 2 black ones and one white one.$2500.00 installed if local or $2500.00 plus shipping for out of town buyers. They also have 2 sets of the H3T Bed Sliders for $750 each, over the counter/pickup.No word on installation.Oh…..one last thing….H2 Chrome and black PC front skid plates…$250 + core exchange.I believe the parts are out of the Plano Store……972-588-7570 should get you in touch if you are interested.

JR3T 05-07-2009 05:15 PM

Looks like a couple of the showroom ones Gunner mentioned about Sewell selling for a discount are up on eBay. Not sure what the reserve is, but they have a black and white one for sale. If you are near Plano and can avoid the shipping charges, might be worth seeing what the reserve price is by putting in a bid.
I didn't really like these at first, but now I am on the fence. That black one looks pretty good.
Only 22 hours left on this auction...

At first I didn't really care for them either, but after seeing them in person...They sort of grew on me.

They really, really....change the lines of the truck.

Super sweet looking on that DAY STAR/SEMA truck running the 37's.

BajaH3T 05-10-2009 02:04 PM

I've had a cap on every other pickup I've ever owned because I need protection and security for my cargo. I does make it hard to pick up refrigerators from Home Depot though! :)

tonneau cover

hi,, i've just got H3T and am also looking for the Slant back cap,, but as it is so expenive to buy now, am looking for something temporary that i can use instead.
can anyone advise me for tonneau cover or any other thing?? knowing that am in Saudi Arabia and we have lack of dealers here, so it will be through the net.

Thx

BLACKH3T 05-26-2009 08:04 AM

I think most of us agree with you on the cost vega...however I don't see them going down in price.I want one too but can't bring myself to drop the $3000. So I guess I would start saving those Riyals.

BajaH3T 05-27-2009 10:54 AM

These are mostly made to order, so I don't see pricing coming down either. If the demand is low, they may simply discontinue them. I see this as a possibility if the H3T production numbers stay low or the Hummer marque fades away completely  I had a conversation with SnugTop about options on these (ie. tilt down/slider front window, screened tilt out windows on the sides) that are available on most toppers. They told me they were a consideration, but that they have no intention of moving forward with these options at this time. This tells me that they are still testing the market. My advice would be that if you want one, don't wait too long.

Circuitguy 06-04-2009 10:22 AM

Ditto!

Cover order issues?

I just visited the metro Detroit Hummer dealer and they say that the cover is really hard to come by right now due to all the issues with GM and Hummer brand... anyone else here this or is the dealer just stonewalling me?
Think I will try to reach Snugtop directly...
thx!

I skipped the dealer, called MidAmerica in St Louis MO, and ordered it from them. Drove out and had them install it on a saturday. Like the way it completes the look of the truck.

How much did you save and what was the cost in the end?

I do like these tops but again you loose a lot of cargo space in the bed with the slant. Useless for me.

SCOT 07-19-2009 06:45 AM

how did it complete the look of the truck? you now have a regular h3 that you have to go outside to get into the back, then you have to lay down to crawl under the hatch, then as you go up you hit your head? that's it they make you get in at the dealer ,rendering you unconsciuos and you wake up to a stupid cap and a pilfered wallet.

and all you can say is it completes the look of the truck? IT ISN'T A TRUCK NO MORE lmao

H3Rider 07-20-2009 11:55 AM

Well, a good point, but here's what I like:
1) the look of the slant back (kind of like the Hx concept). Completes the back end look. IMHO.
2) I dont have to get on my back and crawl underneath the cap. I just open it and it pops up. If I hop into the bed, yes I can't stand up. But I can easily fit while on my knees.
3) The amt of stuff you can fit in to the regular H3 - I can almost fit in bed of the truck, and now I dont have to get the back seats dirty, and I can still carry 4-5 people in it.
4) I can carry sheets of plywood. A main reason for switching to the H3T. If the hatch on the H3 opened vertically - that would be one thing, but it doesn't so it makes it much more difficult to carry something 8 feet long.
5) Locking front differential as well as locking rear.
6) If I need to I can take the cap off and it's back to the version of the truck others seem to prefer. So I can have it both ways.

Packerdad 07-27-2009 09:02 PM

Mid America is a GO!

Got thru to them and confirmed they can order it through the mfg, mentioned it could take 4 to 5 weeks. $2,995 with a $100 discount.
Since most of my gear is not very tall, even with the dog, the Slant Back is both sharp looking and useful for most of my crhap. Just thought I'd share the news. Decided to upgrade to a leather package... problems...Now... to find a graphite luxury edition close to Michigan...
What happend to the days that you could order the darned thing right from the factory? aren't they making them still in LA?
Gonna miss the H2, but the H3T will be a good filler!
Thanks everyone for the good posts of info!
Tom
