The scond time my side airbags have gone off, ON ROAD!!!

OK this is scary. Last year my side airbags fired off when I went thru a puddle on a dirt/gravel road. I went to the hospital and they said no concussion, (MRI) just a big headache and a really sore neck. Felt like I'd gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.

Today I had two witnesses. I was on a gravel/dirt road following my teen aged son and his friend in his 2WD Toyota PU. All of a sudden, BLAM the side airbags went off. I pulled over thinking I had been shot dead, My son saw the hazard lights go on so they pulled over. they couldn't believe it.

All this after a new transfer case and transmission at 100.000 miles. $6K.

I'm talking to a lawyer and GM this time.

I heard of other H3's where the side airbags went off for no reason.

Thank goodness my son wasn't riding with me. He would have been hurt as well.

jescobe82 09-25-2011 01:12 AM

Yeah, I'm thinking LAWSUIT. That should never happen.

TAINTER 09-25-2011 11:10 PM

I had mine blow also.

PLEASE, contact Home | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and make a report. The more we get the more NHTSA will take it seriously and force GM to take a "real" look at the issues!!

As far as replacement, my warrany claim was denied and I ended up going through my insurance company. The total bill would have been over $3000! I just had to pay my deductable.

PM me with any questions.

Do you have a case? I would be happy to look into this with your case number. Please feel free to contact me privately with more information. Thank you.

Eric at Product Allegations called today. My case number is 734209. He is going to send someone out to look at it and read the black box. There's no body damage or misalignment of the front wheels either time.

I don't think I'll ever feel safe in that car again. What happens if it blows at 75 mph the posted speed on I-70 which I drive all the time. Any passenger and I will be dead, dead, dead.

They keep asking if I was on an incline. I wasn't but I have been before. They didn't blow then.

Broken Halo 09-28-2011 04:42 PM

OOOHHHH NO!!! YOU JUST GAVE TRICIA YOUR CASE NUMBER!!:eek::eek:

talusfan 09-28-2011 04:45 PM

I don't think with 3 post to date he is aware of our onboard customer service rep. Why someone hasn't banned them by now is beyond me, they add absolutely NOTHING to the forum.

They had the nerve to ask you a question like that, on a vehicle which has, as one of it's biggest selling points, its ability to climb steep grades?? I would have been on that rep like ugly on an ape!!:mad: (or to quote Doc..."A Rastafarian On A Dime Bag")

Hello, my side airbags went off last April. I was traveling down a gravel road at 47 mph. GM denied my case at product allegation. After reading the 'codes' they determined that the vehicle properly detected a rollover event. I have filed a small claims court lawsuit in CA and will be going on Nov 10th. I have the GPS coordinates along with 3 other Hummer drivers who were in the vehicles close behind and in front at the time. I feel that GM should at least cover this under my extended warrant. My insurance company (Allstate) denied payment saying it was not caused by an accident but by a fault airbag system. I have the exact fear- that I will get this fixed and the same thing will happen ago. We know we didn't do anything that caused the deployment so we know can happen multiple times. Hopefully GM steps up and takes care of us. Contact me for further information.

Gary

Standard GM response. They have had numerous instances of non-rollover, non-accident air bag deployment and they almost always claim that it is not covered as their starting position. Search this and other Hummer forums and you will come across other owners that have had this issue and fought the fight. This claim will probably be handled by the "bad" GM that was left behind by their bankruptcy. Clearly GM has an issue that needs to be addressed with their airbag rollover sensors. File a report with the NHTSA also. If GM denies the claim due to a rollover event occuring it would seem that your insurance company would be placed in the unenviable position of having to cover for GM's faulty system. I would have to look and see but it seems like several of the people have had their insurance cover the claim and then sue GM. Not sure how that has turned out. Clearly GM has not handled this well and it is a huge black eye for them from a public relations standpoint. I mean why buy one of GM's exploding cars when the airbags going off in a non-emergency situation might actually even cause the collision or rollover event that didn't happen after they deploy for no good reason? Keep us posted.

This is worse than sticking accelerator pedals in my mind. Hope it never happens! Ive seen a few videos of new camaros blowing theirs while doing doughnuts.. Thats not acceptable.

Has your concern been resolved? I was not able to find this case number in my records. I can also look into this with the last eight of your VIN. I would like to set up a case for you with customer assistance if it turns out that you do not have one. Please feel free to contact me privately as well.

They are flying someone out next Monday. I know he said the speed, braking and angle was recorded. Do they record GPS coordinates even if you dont have OnStar?

No GPS type material is recoded in the "black box" under the center arm rest/cubby hole.

It does not matter where it happened. How may HUMMER ADs have you seen where they are on a "road"!

garyj0nes 10-05-2011 10:23 AM

I definitely think the system should be more intelligent on deployment. There are too many cases where it hasn't deployed correctly. These should all be fixed under warranty. For me I have the GPS location of where I was at the time of deployment plus pictures of the road and the airbags deployed. There are no signs of car damage. I think these will come in real handy when I go to the judge in my small claims court.

SteveSS 10-06-2011 06:31 PM

I know the GM rep is wanting to look at the H3 and the road. I just don't exactly which part of the road it happened. As I said I was following my son and his friend. Once I knew I wasn't dead I started out after them. They saw my flashing hazard lights and pulled over so I could tell them what happened.

I really don't want this fixed and handed back to me. I will never feel safe in that car again.

I went to the doctor and she told me a chiropractor wouldn't be a bad idea. I couldn't turn head more than 10 drees either way. Now at least I can turn it to the left a little better.

TAINTER 10-06-2011 08:15 PM

I hope they fix the H3 100% on their dime! Then you can dispose of it who you like.

I would NEVER see a chiropractor or EVER see a real MD who ever said that a chiropractor is not a "a bad idea". If you want to rely on seeing someone who will require you to see them for the rest of your life for an "adjustment", feel free to see a chiropractor.

Mr. Fancy Pants 10-06-2011 08:17 PM

I agree, Chiropractors are a joke. I fell for that payment plan several years back. I swear they "adjust" you in on one visit, then out on the next so you continully feel good then bad. So, you keep returning and paying their light bill lol.

SteveSS 10-07-2011 01:58 PM

I do agree with you guys on the Hoodo-Vodoo the chiropractors sell. All they want is your insurance number.

But after saying that, I can turn my head to the left now. I couldn't before. I still can't turn it to the right. A guy called and confirmed he was coming in on Monday to look at the H3. If they say no, I have a lawyer ready to go.

I think iunderstand what he is saying. I agree my dentist always wants to take x-rays. I've told her no before. Most MD's I've been to usually wnat to get me out of there as fast as they can.

TAINTER 10-13-2011 02:09 PM

Steve, any updates????

SteveSS 10-14-2011 09:59 AM

No not really. I called the GM guy. He called back at least. Told me I'd have to wait a while. That kinda sucks since I have to go out on an oil well next week. I have to borrow my Mom's Explorer, which makes me feel like a snot-nosed kid.

The Inspector said I had one brake caliper leaking and some bailing wire wrapped around the back axle. The wire happens all the time since I'm a geologist and we have to drive on farm property.

I was thinking we could band together. If it will help any one's case I will make a statement about my experiences with side airbags and have it notarized for you.

TAINTER 10-14-2011 02:31 PM

did you contact NAHTSA and start a case with them? I try to tell everyone that they should do that so GM will eventually feel some preessure from "the man".

SteveSS 10-15-2011 07:52 PM

I want to wait for the GM response before I do anything. It still sucks to have a 4000 lb. paperweight in my driveway. It's a beautiful paperweight. Once I know it wasn't going anywhere I detailed it Black with H3 chrome wheels and mud/highway tires. Like I said in the very first post, I just dropped $6K into it this summer for a tranny and transfer case.

It's a good off-roader, it just isn't any good on the road. I've told a couple of H3 owners to be careful on road.
