Rotted gas tank?

Hi all,
New to the forum. My mechanic is telling me that my gas tank is rotted due to a fuel leak.

When I completely fill the tank up fuel starts to spill out and pools on the ground underneath the rear driver-side door.

I thought that a hummer fuel tank couldn't rot out because it is plastic.
I am more inclined to think that maybe the filler neck is rotted?

I just wanted to know your thoughts. I sure don't want to get ripped off.

Thanks

You are right, the H2 gas tank is plastic, but the sending unit is metal. My sending unit rotted out and would piss gas everywhere while it was running. I changed it with a sending unit that is on Ebay for around 100 bucks. The filler neck is a rubber hose from the tank up into the fender well, so I doubt that it is your filler neck.
