Repairing The Emergency Brake
 
My 06 Hummer H3 broke the cable going from the brake pedal down to the underside of the truck. It doesn't look like a difficult job. Does anyone know how to remove it so it can be replaced? I can't see where it attaches to the brake pedal.

one for your right foot, one for your left.

the cable hooks up to the one on the left.
you might want to buy one of the many service manuals available for your car.
it will give details on how to do it.

It would appear that you are talking about the front cable (not the R or L rear).

Unbolt the cable from the cross over bar (where the front cable ends with the adjusting bolt under the driver door). Unbolt the brake cable bracket from the frame (follow the cable forward under the truck to the bottom of the fender area), remove the brake cable bracket bolt.

Remove the inside kick trim panel (just held in with interior clips) so you can see the Parking brake pedal, twist to remove the park brake front cable from the knee bolster trim panel. The park brake front cable is secured by the locking notches in the knee bolster trim panel.

Disconnect the brake warning connector. Disconnect the parking brake release cable from the brake pedal. Sometimes it is easier if you take out the nut up top and the two bolts through the side to be able to move the pedal assembly around to disconnect the front cable, .... disconnect the cable from the clip..

There is a grommet that you need to disconnect or slide out so you can Pull the old cable out (from under the truck)and note where it goes so the new cable can be put back though and into the truck.

Reverse the above and done. Pretty easy really. My over view may sound confusing, but just follow the cable and you'll see what you have to do.

One more tip.... look at how much adjuster bolt sticks through the equalizer cross over bar on the old cable before you start.

When you put the new one back in, try to get it close to the same amount of adjuster bolt through that nut so at least you will be close to proper adjustment.
The actual adjustment can be a PITA. Test it so it works when done, and so the release works as well. If if will not hold the truck when depressed on a slight grade, tighten the nut a bit, but make sure you do not over do it and cause it to drag. You may have to fiddle with this a while.

If you overtighten the adjuster, isn't the cable prone to breakage?

Yeah, I think mine was too tight so I'll watch it when I do it.

I just had the same problem.
Ordered the cable and got the whole thing with the pedal assembly and cable!
The garage installed it in about 2 hours.
It seems that the cable can not be ordered alone. It is fitted into the pedal thing.
Parking brake pedal + cable + installation = 220€.

That might be true in Belgium?

Here the front cable PN is 24301032 and Nally's has it for $27.19.
