Removing rust on H3

3 Attachment(s)
I have a 2006 H3 that used to roll on the streets of Chicago and you'll see below the awesome work that the elements have done to my truck. I live in California now and shouldn't be dealing with this anymore. What is the best way to remove this rust?

POR 15 would be my suggestion.

Gotta love how they salt the hell out of the roads every winter up north and east

get a drill with a metal bristle attachment and climb underneath the behomeath and go to town with it. Then spray it down with H2O, and get some zincromium primer from napa, it's brown, spray the hell out of everything, including the exhaust, then get semi gloss black, and again go to town.

Thank you all. I've been reading up on this and most people are suggesting zinc-based solutions. Does this sound right? If so, which products for cleaning and prevention? I'm really a novice on this kind of stuff and don't want to cause further damage. It mostly seems like surface rust but I won't know until I get under there this weekend.

Ya sounds about right; zinc is some tough **** that just happens to be rust-proof.

Sounds right. Zinc is used to galvanize iron & steel. It is more reactive than iron or steel so it will attract all local oxidation to it. Just put a couple of sacrificial zinc anodes on the bottom of my friends boat hull and a zinc plug on the prop. Usually how it works is the the zinc works as an anode while the hull (or chassis in your case) will be the cathode. Corrosion will attack the zinc instead of the other metals so in essence the zinc sacrifices itself so the other metals won't oxidize.

I agree on the POR15. I am getting ready to order some to spruce up my old Corvette frame.

Looks to be just surface rust. I would just get a can of undercoating and go to town.

Why do you say to spray it down with H20? I would use mineral spirits or a metal cleaner before using water. The deposits in the water will just oxidize again prior to painting and defeat the purpose.
