pulling my hair out

2005 H2 - when warmed up to operating temp, shut off engine and when try to start, everything normal except starter doesn't spin. I have to let the vehicle cool off for aprox. 2 hours before it will start again. Of course the 3 times I have had it to the shop they can't replicate the problem! I had them check the starter, battery, wiring, and had them replace the ignition relay and the neutral start gizmo, no help. Without being able to pinpoint the problem, I guess I am down to replacing the starter and if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the ignition/key switch.

Any ideas?

Usually with high heat it's the starter or low battery cranking amps. Check your volts on battery when this happens again. How many miles on vehicle? I would say starter.

75 k miles and new battery.
When it does this, everything else (gauges, lights, accessories, etc) is normal, but starter is completely silent and does nothing, so I too am thinking something in the starter is expanding with the heat and losing contact.

I get 120,000 miles on my Lexus LX470 starters.(Which they say these things run forever) I have heard some H2 owners replacing starters at 80k to 100k so you are most likely due. Keep me posted.

my mechanic said to whack the starter with a hammer the next time it doesn't start - if it starts then the starter is the culprit.
The only problem is, now that I'm carrying the hammer, it starts every time, just like the 3 times it's been in the shop!

Update

The problem was the starter.
Dealer was finally able to duplicate the problem.
The starter has an internal relay that was sometimes not wanting to do its job.

Glad they got it fixed. Now enjoy your H2!

Yep. Mine went out about a month ago. Luckily, once under the truck, I saw how open it was. Probably the easiest starter I have ever replaced.
